Nations Gather To Protect Sacred Site

Author: David Melmer Source: Indian Country Today

Title: NATIONS GATHER TO PROTECT SACRED SITE
Hundreds of people, both American Indian and non-Indian supporters, gathered recently at the Bear Butte to seek guidance and pray for answers to help stop the growth of entertainment venues that cater to bikers by the thousands who drink alcohol in an atmosphere of loud music and louder drag pipes.
Bear Butte is sacred as a location to pray and seek visions; a sacred mountain where more than 30 American Indian nations have considered a place to communicate with the Creator.
On July 4, people from many nations gathered and set up tents, campers and tipis with the intent to stay at the base of the mountain until Aug 4. While there, the leaders expect to work out their strategy to stop the growth of biker bars, campgrounds, entertainment venues and in general bring a halt to the increased activity within the earshot and sight of those who pray on the Mato Paha, the Lakota word for Bear Butte. The Cheyenne call the mountain Noahvose.

Sacred places are just that, sacred, forever. A momentary droplet of time passes, we come we go, the more things change they stay the same. The Red Warrior has much in common with the true Biker spirit but there are great differances also. One day perhaps this will not be.

have a lot in common...as someone has already suggested, a lot of bikers are from non-mainstream religions, and most likely if the elders asked them, or invited them to a drum circle, or something else positive, rather than arguing, that they would most likely join forces.

This is our fight, too. How many sacred sites, stone circles, and sacred groves have we/our ancestors watched being destroyed? I can't stand to hear of this continuing, in the the bloody 21st Century. WTF?!
You can move a bar, but you can't move a mountain; if the folks in in the Black Hills got a raw deal, I hope they fight it in courts and win - but I'm afraid that this type of fight inevitably leads to tension between native and non-Native communties - look what's happening in Ontario now - so Goddess grant this ends peacably for both communities, biker and Native alike.
Blessed BE! Liz

I am a biker. More people should be. 50+ miles to a gallon with a small bike. The bigger bikes don't do as well true... Some of my friends have been to Sturgis. ALL my friends say the Indians got a raw deal. Most just don't know that much about the Indian religion. They DO care, just don't have contact to learn from. Perhaps the Indians should enlist the aid of the bikers. Maybe invite them to a drumming? I am sure many would seek knowledge of the Indian religion. I know I would. Bikers are good people, just like Witches. Antares

You can't have your cake and eat it too. If my home state has to suffer the blight of large, sprawled out and ultra-gaudy tribal casinos on every other block, then I'm afraid I can't shed a tear for the 30-plus nations and their sacred site they now want biker-free and all to themselves. I never thought the biker crowd was a good target demographic to begin with, to resurrect a fragile economy, but that's the bed the state of South Dakota made. Now you get to lie in it.
