Judge Denies Inmate Religious Request For Sword

Author: AP   Source: Fox News

Title: JUDGE DENIES INMATE RELIGIOUS REQUEST FOR SWORD

A convicted killer's lawsuit that sought items for the practice of an ancient European religion has been thrown out of court.

Darrell Hoadley of Lead wanted a toy sword and other privileges for the practice of Asatru. His original handwritten complaint listed himself as counsel elder of the Asatru religious group at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Thats kinda funny that the guy is from lead sd and actually has a "cult" because most of the people you find in this area are Christian and you've got to be careful of what you say to people around here to a degree. (you know cause i am one of the worst devil worshipers in hot springs. and hello can he get any dumber his in prison for murder they gonna give him a sword or much of anything else. lol

Your Forgeting Something Apr 5th. at 2:31:44 pm EDT

Morrin (Willis, Texas) - Email Me

Asatru or not, the guy is in PRISON. When in prison you loose rights. This includes going to the bathroom by yourself. Didn't he get there by doing something violent??? Even if he wouldn't do anything wrong with a sword, there are OTHER INMATES!!! Who knows what would happen if it got "lost" in the general population inside the prison. I can tell that the majority of you haven't either been in prison or have known someone that has. Things get "lost", people get in fights, guys get raped, etc... It is not just a question of religious freedom for one person that the warden has to take into consideration, but also for the safety of the population.

Something else to consider: If they can make knives out of spoons just think of the edge that can be put on a sword, and a wooden one can be a great bat to hit with.

Plastic or not, did he really expect they would give him one?

What Experts? Apr 4th. at 5:19:38 pm EDT

Yellowolf (Sandy, Utah) - Email Me

I would REALLY like to know exactly which religious EXPERTS consider Asatru as a religion that promotes violence. The local Mormon bishop, perhaps? I've been an Asatru priest for quite awhile, and never once at ANY gathering has there been any mention of who we should kill or how we should do it! We absolutely do not, under ANY circumstances condone violence in any form or under any pretext. This little twinkie in prison for murder is one of the many people who have given Asatru a big black eye. I personally do not recognize him as Asatruar - he is a shameful embarrassment to our belief system. May the ancient Norse Gods deal with him, and all like him with swift and certain Norse justice.

Please Call Associated Press! Apr 3rd. at 9:27:08 pm EDT

Shannon & Richard (couple) (San Jose, California) - Email Me

As a member of the Asatru faith, I am asking everyone viewing this article to call and very strongly object to this article characterizing Asatru as a violent faith. Associated Press was responsible for this poorly researched article and the number of their CEO is 212-621-1500 and the name is Thomas Curly. The person writing the article is Carson Walker at 605-332-3111. Demand to be put into his voice mail because Associated Press is now conveniently claiming the man is out of the office until Tuesday.

What is happening in our prisons is prisoners are using religious activity to cover for criminal activity and then claiming this criminal activity is covered by the recent act allowing religious freedom in the prisons. Astatru, Christianity and Islam have all now been used to cover for criminal activity. A violent prisoner in Alabama actually formed a white supremacist, neo-nazi denomination of Christianity which shockingly, has been given status by the Internal Revenue Service as a legitimate religion! Of course, Asatru members posted the local news clipping on this abomination of a religion to an Asatru Website but the mass media conveniently ignored the bizarre incident. It is time to not tolerant the presses smearing of Neopagan religions and get out the word that "religious freedom" can not be used as a convenient cover for criminal activity or hate propaganda!

Your in jail and want a sword "i.e." a weapon. What prison warden in his right mind would give an inmate a WEAPON.

Blessed Be,

Not As Asaturer But... Apr 3rd. at 11:57:29 am EDT

Lady-hearted Mojo (Irving, Texas) - Email Me

"Some religious experts consider Asatru a pagan religion that can be interpreted as encouraging violence. It has becoming popular among prison inmates, one of whom was executed in Virginia for killing a fellow prisoner at the foot of an altar."

I really dislike seeing statements like this about Asatru. I am friendly with several members of a Kindred and none of them has ever told me that they thought violence was a the way to go. Among them I have see a high value placed on faith, devotion to their religion, personal integrity, love of family and friends, etc. The Nine Noble Virtues do not include or encourage violence, but strive to make a person a better human being.
It seems that Asatru's association with racists groups and prision inmates and the corruption of the Asatru faith has become it's cross to bear, so to speak, much like Wicca/Witchcraft's erroneous association with Satanism is its cross to bear.

A Tool Is Not Really Necessary... Apr 3rd. at 9:06:12 am EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

The focus of any person practicing in many paths, is to be able to do away with many tools altogether in their ritual work. Wands, swords, athames and the other trappings are great for ritual work, but what happens when one needs to do a spell and one doesn't have a tool, herb or the right color candle or incense at hand?
There are a few ways of focusing on the intent of the spell without waving a wand or sword around, And while it is nice to have all the tools one needs, they are but trappings, after all.
There are many toys that look too uncomfortably like the real thing these days and while most toy swords do look fakey in the light, in the dark, they can be mistaken for real. Besides prisoners improvise real weapons from the most unlikely things and a toy sword, even a rubber one could disguise a real knife or a pick.
He's better off without it.

WHAT THIS PERSON REALLY NEEDS.... Apr 3rd. at 5:00:55 am EDT

Sure Religious Freedoms, But Apr 3rd. at 12:52:40 am EDT

Lil Mecca (Selkirk, Manitoba) - Email Me - Web

Yes, I can understand his right to practice his path, but when you see that they are making weapons out of some of the most strangest things...Why would anyone allow a sword, toy or not into a prison. Isn't this guy in there for murder in the first place.

All I can say is that I hope that he finds the path the he is looking for, & learn from the mistakes of his past.

What This Person Needs..... Apr 2nd. at 10:26:27 pm EDT

Thorin (Newaygo, Michigan) - Email Me

What this person needs, if anything, is faith, or a belief in the Gods & Goddesses. A sword, hammer, horn, alter, etc.......they are only THINGS......tools to be used. If you don't have the ability to worship your Gods or Goddesses w/o any of them, then you prove you are not truely able to. Having been in jail (Back child support) for 5 days, and not even allowed to keep my Thor-hammer necklace, I never felt alone......my Gods and Goddesses did not give up on me, as I never gave up on them. And, I didn't need a silly plastic sword to worship them.....either in jail, or out! LOL Glad to hear this nutter didn't get one.

... Apr 2nd. at 10:13:15 pm EDT

Draken (Bronx, New York) - Email Me - Web

This may seem strange coming from someone who not only sleeps with a sword by his bed but also thinks most gun laws in the US are pure bullsh*t (due to the Second Amendment) , but if you're a prisoner you do not deserve an object that could be used as a deadly weapon. Period.

Sick And Tired Apr 2nd. at 8:10:35 pm EDT

Autumnsong (Bessemer, Alabama) - Email Me

I am getting sick and tired of these people making us look bad. You are in jail for murder. They are not going to give you a sword. Get over it! Funny, I'm not in jail and yet I practice Asatru just fine and I don't have a sword. This guy is just trying to cause trouble.
