Web Site Offers Free Trees, Plants

Author: The Press & Dakotan   Source: The Press & Dakotan (SD)

Title: WEB SITE OFFERS FREE TREES, PLANTS

In garden writer and photographer Cheryl Richter's new project Free Trees and Plants.com., Richter finds unsold trees and plants and hires disabled workers to package them. She then sends the plants to anyone who reserves them at freetreesandplants.com.

Richter's industry-contacts alert her about large numbers of plants that have not been sold and are scheduled for destruction. The free plants are then featured on the Web site and shipped on a first-reserved, first-served basis to anyone who will send $6.95 to cover shipping and processing.

What a wonderful idea - give some beautiful plants a second chance to be loved by a caring indivdual. And what better way to give disabled individuals a job. I'm sure those who take care of preparing these plants have a greater sense of purpose.

Remember, plants are necessary for life. We have a symbiotic relationship with greenery - we give them carbon dioxide - they recycle our oxygen. Plants are food, both for us and our animal friends. No plants may equal no bugs, but then what would the birds eat. Concrete is not the answer. The rest of us should continue to plant, sow, seed and cultivate to our hearts content.

Grow on!!

free pollen and ragweed. free attraction for stinger-bearing insects like bees and hornets-- I guess give-away'ers aren't allergic to these things. plants bring sneezing, coughing, headaches, sore throats, drowsiness, stuffy noses, and secondary throat and nasal infections. and dangerous bugs. i'm with the italians and the japanese-- just pour concrete over everything. miserable plants.

I live in a townhouse so I can't plant trees or shrubs but I have a flowerbed just outside my door that is basically just growing weeds right now. I ordered a couple of different kinds of daylillies so now I *have* to take care of the flowerbed. :-)

This is such a great idea... I have told all sorts of people about it already. :-)

I've wanted dogwoods all my life in my yard. So, I went to the site, saw that they had dogwoods, and promptly ordered some. If they still have the lilacs next week, I'm going to get those too.

I checked out what dogwoods were going for at a nursery - $9.60 per tree. I got 2 trees for $6.95 shipping cost. That's a great deal, easy on my budget, and I'm helping to save the plants and give disabled people work. It's a good thing all around.

Oh, and for all you herbal-type people out there - they've got lavender too. Great for a variety of things, not the least of which is making your house smell good!

I think this website is a wonderful idea. Lilac! Lavender! Dogwood! Now, if only I didn't live in an upstairs apartment. ::sigh::
