I didn't see the name of the book and this article is so vague.
But I do think the parent should have talked over her concerns with the child's teacher at least. It's what my mother would have done if she was concerned.

the mass media. People today seem to want to believe everything they see in the news. I'm a huge pro wrestling fan and one of the things Vince McMahon said was absolutely right. "Do you know why the news and WWE are so mucfh alike? They're both entertainment" It's really ashame how so many people can't think on their own anymore.

First of all, Family is not fundamentally a Racist term, but Parents own Childhood by Right of Creation, and it's an opportunity to build Family. Parents have a right to pull their children from School, if the voices in their tea-cups tell them to. Just as a Judge might claim the authority to decide what Cancer Treatment is appropriate for a Child, in his jurisdiction, it's the parents' call as to which jurisdiction the Child is treated in. I really don't see the big deal, if a parent leads her children on the path of Ignorance in God's Name, and chooses not to trust that child to a Civil Servant. The Schools are there as an institutional baby-sitting service, for children with nothing constructive to do, in our machine age, so Home Schooling demonstrates a life less wasted.
Now, if this is a story about that Coven Leader, Solomon Davidson, whose ring is said to contain thousands of Daemons, and who maintained a house for each of a thousand wives, and as many proverbs, I can understand how the Christians might grow upset, over the celebration of guy who built one of history's most famous monuments over the grave of a Druidess. Contrary to some superstitions, that hold how an allegorical concept can knock up a Virgin, Seven Pillar Sophia was a real person, and the Eighth Pillar was the School Entrance.
If, in Wind in the Willows, Toad is being Abjured against being one of the AEsyr, I've too many AEsyr friends, not to take exception to that. Maybe we can someday get that balm down their throats, so they don't croak so much.

I am a Pagan homeschooler. Not all homeschoolers are ignorant fools. I have a teaching credential and a graduate degree in education. Don't lump homeschoolers into one fundy box. Thanks.

The story she found so offensive and riddled with demons and witchcraft was about King Solomon... a Bible character. SHEESH! Ok, so maybe the story was a bit mature for her 8-year-old, but that's NO reason to just pull the kid from school. For goodness's sake!

didn't Jesus enter Jerusalem riding an ass? Isn't that celebrated as Palm Sunday? If it is ok to have ass in the Bible, why not in Wind in the Willows? I bet most kids would have found the line funny--a toad being an ass. Or isn't that word used for a four footed creature anymore.

Opus the Poet (Garland, Texas) - Email Me - Web

I read Junior Great Books when I was in school back in the Johnson administration. It's great literature, recognized for being good stories and challenging reading for over a century. That fundy is a douche, literally. And I mean that in both senses of the word "cold shower" and "feminine rinse".

Or do fundies just like to gripe and complain about anything and everything. I swear I've never seen such a dour group as fundamentalist and evangelical Christians. It's either their religion or, if you'll excuse the crassness, they need to have sex more often. I mean forget about oppression and let's admit to their repression.

| Could Someone Please Explain... | Aug 22nd. at 11:57:48 pm EDT

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

Could someone please explain to me how the Christian Bible is NOT as horrendous as the unknown book in the "news" story? I mean, what is the book's title and/or ISBN; what is the subject matter of that book? The people do have a right to know this information, and to with-hold it is just plain wrong and non-professional. From what I have seen and read in the other comments, I get the impression that the unknown book is somehow related to the Christian Bible, if not directly derived from it -- and if that's the case, that "Christian" mother is just plain wacko.
Also, I agree with others about letting the extremist Christians pull their kids out of school: They have that right. But don't tell them that by teaching only ONE view they are making sure their kids are not able to deal with the Real World and all of its many problems. That way, those kids will be riddled with insecurities and perhaps take those extremist views with them as they go through life single, alone and childless -- or when they perform their "cop-assisted suicides", all in the name of their Blood-Loving God.
Yes, I said "Blood-Loving". I read the Christian Bible, too.

I'm on a GMail list with two fundy Mom's who admit that they don't understand enough basic arithmetic to follow knitting instructions. (example: ...add 5 stitches spaced evenly across the garment (120 stitches) ...)
They're proudly home schooling their kids.
I'm afraid the next generation of fundies will starve to death - they won't be able to get a job!

That caused all the ruckus. She had a right to yank her kid out if it pleased her. That leaves more room for those who actively want to learn something beyond the confines of one narrow thought.

Wolf Mage (Angels Camp, California) - Email Me

If she pulled her son out of school because of the witchcraft and demon references in the book, she better keep her child out of church as well considering that the bible is choked full of those types of refferences and storys need we discuss King Saul consulting the medium or Jesus casting out the thousand demons from the man.
It is sad to see people stop people from learning simply because they are afraid of knowledge. Sheltering an individual from the reality of the world and the knowledge it contains is sad, and greatly distructive.

...my ass if she wasn't to pull her kid from advanced placement classes because she's scared of us witchy-types. At this rate, the next generation of fundies won't even be getting a primary education.
Should make our job that much easier.
