Wilson County Schools Sued For Censoring Religion

Author: Associated Press   Source: Chattanooga Times Free Press (TN)

Title: WILSON COUNTY SCHOOLS SUED FOR CENSORING RELIGION

Less than a year after a federal judge ruled the Wilson County school district illegally promoted religion, the school board is facing a new lawsuit for banning it.

The Alliance Defense Fund filed a lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, claiming the school board censored posters for a student-led prayer event.

The Christian legal organization filed the lawsuit on behalf of four families.

The dispute involves posters for a Lakeview Elementary School student-led prayer in September. The posters included the phrases “In God We Trust” and “God Bless the U.S.A.” They also had disclaimers saying the event was not sponsored by the school, The Tennessean of Nashville reports.

Censoring Religion? Mar 7th. at 10:33:07 pm EST

I can't help but wonder what the "Christian" reaction from the "Praying Parents" would be to posters being put up in the school, advertising -- and recruiting for -- a Native American Peyote Ceremony to be held on school grounds. Or perhaps a "Sweat Lodge" Ceremony. Or a "Sun Dance" Ceremony held during the Summer Break. Obviously, the school would in no way be sponsoring the Ceremony.... Would the "Praying Parents" sue the school if such posters were allowed...or not?

Beyond the obvious pun, such a thing would probably blow the minds of those "Praying Parents".

Actually, based on past reactions from Bible Belt "Christians" -- I really don't have to wonder.

All Children DO Have The Right... Mar 7th. at 9:37:09 am EST

to pray in school. The always have and, I hope, the they always will. Let us never forget this. The xtian activists are becoming more adept at playing the victim, so much so that many people who should know better have become convinced that "prayer is not allowed in school".
What is NOT allowed is any religious event (prayer, meeting, book burning, etc.) organized, promoted, or otherwise supported by the school. All of this is as it should be and, as a citizenry, we need to point out all of the facts every time this or that religious group feels that their brand deserves special treatment.

BTW, "mute" means silent or without speech. "Moot" is more often, if not necessarily more correctly, used in describing a "point" or argument.

New Principal Mar 5th. at 2:35:27 pm EST

My son goes to Lakeview, and the current principal came in after the earlier fiasco. I agree with the earlier post - I feel really sorry for this guy! He has attempted to take a moderate stance in allowing the posters, but trying to restrain the messages. The group now meets next door to the school under the flagpole at a church - wow, what a concept! Praying parents will lose, again, but the principal has to spend energy defending himself. The earlier principal allowed the posters in the school in full gold glitter-cross glory, complete with new testament quotes. Seriously, I couldn't believe it. Bravo to our new guy for showing some sense of restraint.

I'm rather sick of those wackos. Dobsonites are a dying breed in this country, but they can't ever let go fast enough. *sigh*

for the school. It seems to be caught between a rock and a hard place by this group called Praying Parnets (?) . First they get sued because this group is handing out flyers on school property and now they are getting sued because they are trying to be complaint with the law. As long as they aren't allowing lets say a local pagan child to put up posters saying "Goddess bless America", then I don't see how they are being discriminatory.

Simple Revenge Mar 5th. at 8:24:32 am EST

SnowRaven (Medina, Ohio) - Email Me

"In 2006, the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee sued the Wilson County school board for inappropriately promoting religion when a group known as the Praying Parents met on campus and handed out notes telling students they’d been prayed for.

The four families suing the school have ties to the Praying Parents."

So the same people who caused all the problems 3 years ago are up to it again. Sigh. I rather hope the judge sees this challenge for the crude attempt at revenge and intrusion that it is.

It Should Go Both Ways... Mar 5th. at 8:21:55 am EST

Rik Potter Butler, HP (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

If censoring religion is the issue here, and they're allowing Christian groups to put up posters for a prayer-meeting, then they should also be obligated to allow posters for other religious groups, (Wiccan, etc) to do the same.

I know this is a mute point but, why is it that "christian" children should have the right to pray in school? Why Shouldn't all children have the right to pray in school or not?

What, They Couldn't Do That Outside? Mar 4th. at 8:24:05 pm EST

Too bad they were. School really isn't the place for prayer led activities if they weren't the sponsors.
