ACLU Demands Schools Allow Access To Gay Websites

Author: Chris Echegaray   Source: The Tennessean

Title: ACLU DEMANDS SCHOOLS ALLOW ACCESS TO GAY WEBSITES

Students and parents are demanding Metro Nashville's public schools stop blocking access to Web sites about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

They complained to the American Civil Liberties Union, which on Wednesday gave Metro and Knox County schools an April 29 deadline to announce plans to open access to the non-sexual sites. A letter to the districts threatened lawsuits if they don't comply.

Metro parents previously complained to the school district about the lack of support for gay and lesbian students, the teasing and the fatal results.

Clare Sullivan, a parent of a lesbian daughter who attended Metro schools, cited recent news reports of students who committed suicide after constant harassment for being gay.

I forgot, in my fervor, to add the link to a reference on homosexual Greek soldiers in ancient times.... Use this link as a starting point for your own research.

If the schools are going to ban access to certain "gay" websites, then they should also ban access to ALL websites which mention the word "gay" or "homosexual" (or even an allusion to homosexuality) -- since that word is so commonly used to denote male homosexuals and homosexuality is so "bad". Hmmm...which Historical things/times/actions would no longer be mentioned....

The "Gay Nineties", a period during the 1800's; the "Enola Gay", an airplane; the original word "Gay", which means (or used to, at least) "bright, cheery, merry, showy"; an entire portion of Greek History -- soldiers who were homosexual, so they would fight all the more to keep their fellow soldiers from being killed (and they did, with exceptional results, see link below) . So many other Historical references and just plain learning would be wiped out because they "promote homosexuality"....

Well, if they're going to ban "gay", they need to ban "church", "penis", "religion", "prick", "puck", "cock" (it's a ROOSTER!!!!) , all mention of female dogs ("bitch") and anything else which might possibly be construed as "vulgar" or "sinful".

Let's just stop people from learning anything and everything, and turn the U.S. into a completely illiterate -- and ignorant -- place to live.

If they allow anything anti-gay, then gay websites should be allowed. And if certain religious websites abound, then alternatives should also.
Besides,a Gay life style is not as "sexual" as it is an alternative lifestyle, since so much more than sex is involved. That is like saying a "traditional" relationship is based only in the bedroom and nowhere else.
And waxing rhapsodic about one while denigrating the other actually makes little sense since both types of couples must deal with everything that comes along in much the same fashion.

As such it is not possible to personally Answer a question which was asked, so the reply is here.
there are many LGBT websites for teens which are NOT sexual in nature, they deal with peer pressure, hostility, answers to common questions, links to turn to for support such as the PFLAG group and other such resources.
Such issues stem from common problems faced by LGBT teens when dealing with understanding and coming to grips with their orientation. "Sexual" questions would be those directly relating to the mechanics of actual intercourse, a 'how to" in other words.
The development of an egg to a full term child is still considered an aspect of Sexual Education although the actual act of sex is not discussed (in that particular example) so it too would be considered "non-sexual".

I still find it very interesting that Anti-Gay sites are NOT blocked.

This Is Ridiculous... Apr 17th. at 11:06:38 am EDT

This isn't a matter of teaching kids sex on the Internet, there are also important things like news relevant to our community, how to deal with the abysmal level of homophobia in our schools, coming out to parents, and things we as LGBT and queer people deal with every day.

"Sexual lifestyle?" Give me a break. That burns me up and can't even believe I just read that.

How Can They Say Its Non-sexual Apr 17th. at 10:20:15 am EDT

Nightmyst (Henrico, Virginia) - Email Me

First thing I would like to say is that I am pro-choice and I believe that people should have the right to be gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

The issue here is that a SEXUAL lifestyle should have nothing to do with the public school system. If there going to ban homosexual websites then they should also ban heterosexual websites. Unless they are using these sites for sexual education, in which case I think should be taught in the home not in a public school system.

Sexual lifestyle websites or references that claim to have non-sexual education behind them are complete crap. They're using personal interests and preferences to draw attention which, imo, I believe is exploiting the learning environment.

They also block sites on alternative spirituality and the occult, including . See the link, any site with an asterisk is blocked.

"Sites that promote and provide information on religions such as Wicca, Witchcraft or Satanism. Occult practices, atheistic views, voodoo rituals or any other form of mysticism are represented here. Includes sites that endorse or offer methods, means of instruction, or other resources to affect or influence real events through the use of spells, incantations, curses and magic powers. This category includes sites which discuss or deal with paranormal or unexplained events." --From the ENA website.

Have fun ladies and gents. :) My high school had a similar web filtering program. Luckily I was friends with the kids who knew how to get around it.

If the schools are going to ban "Gay Websites" they should ban all partisan websites. In the interest of equality. When some schools were told that they had to allow pagan books in the school because they had bibles, a lot of schools banned the bible. They would rather do that then introduce ideas that did not fit in with their beliefs. I see something similar happening here. They will ban access to all religious and other websites, just so they do not have to provide access to websites that advocate a 'disgusting' lifestyle. It is wonderful that people are trying to bring these issues out in the open. But these kinds of legal fights rarely have any winners.
I wish them the best, and hope that they do win. It would set a wonderful precedent for making schools in our country more open and accepting.

Those same systems DO allow access to websites such as Exodus International and NARTH, both famously "anti-gay".
