Tenn. School Can't Bar Religious Phrases From Student Posters

Author: The Associated Press   Source: First Amendment Center Online

Title: TENN. SCHOOL CAN'T BAR RELIGIOUS PHRASES FROM STUDENT POSTERS

Less than a year after a federal judge ruled the Wilson County school district illegally promoted religion, the same judge has ruled it cannot ban religious phrases from student posters.

The ruling comes in time for students at Lakeview Elementary School to promote their prayer event for the National Day of Prayer on today.

The Alliance Defense Fund filed a lawsuit on behalf of five families in March in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, claiming the school board censored posters for a student-led prayer event in September.

The posters included the phrases “In God We Trust” and “God Bless the U.S.A.” They also had disclaimers saying the event called “See You at the Pole” was not sponsored by the school, The Tennessean reports.

There is a huge difference between Student speech and Administration/staff/Teacher speech.

Students are not employees of a government organization, the staff and teachers are.

That said, it seems to me that, given the connection between this case and the previous one which the "praying parents" lost, I strongly suspect that the religious posters are more parent than student driven.

Those "praying parents" are now just using their children, instead of the school staff, to push their agenda. Lovely.

I've seen this tactic work before when Christian groups insisted that their groups be allowed at school and their handouts go to all students; whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Just watch what happens if a student makes a poster with the words "Blessed Be", "Goddess Bless America", "Hail Odin", etc. Its simple, every religion or none.

I have no problem with the posters having a religious theme. Be it christian or pagan. However, I remember this story when it came out a year ago? The group praying parents worries me. I would think that they are the kind of group to push christian ideals on the school. (prayer, the MYTH of creation, and so on) That is where I would have a problem. And of course it would be fun to see them object to pagan posters in the school, just to be told that THEIR lawsuit is the reason that pagan posters have to be left up! If my children went to this school I could see all sorts of problems between myself and this group.
