Sun Works Overtime At White Rock Lake Solstice Festival

Author: Jeffrey Weiss Source: The Dallas Morning News

Title: SUN WORKS OVERTIME AT WHITE ROCK LAKE SOLSTICE FESTIVAL
Amy Martin, the force behind Saturday's summer solstice celebration at White Rock Lake, had asked her weather wizard friends to try nudging a cool front into Dallas. It didn't work.
But with temperatures in the Dallas area topping 100 by early afternoon and heat indexes of 105 and higher, maybe a festival dedicated to the sun made sense. Even though it happened about a week late.
The solstice, the year's longest day, happened June 21. Saturday was the closest weekend day that the Bath House Cultural Center by the lake was available.
The event, which drew several hundred people, began with an Egyptian-style ritual performed in ancient Egyptian-style garb by members of the local Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans.

Seriously - it was 103 in Dallas, 101 in Cairo. But it was worth it to be a part of such a wonderful event.
Denton CUUPS was honored to perform the first ritual of the day, or rather the first after Amy's incense burning. There are pictures of the Egyptian Summer Solstice ritual on my blog at the link.

It was a great event, hot as hell, but still a great event. Amy and her crew of volunteers did a great job as always.
Happy (belated) Solstice!
