Pagan Practitioners In Basin Keep Beliefs Hush-Hush

Author: Matthew MCGowan Source: Odessa American (TX)

Title: PAGAN PRACTITIONERS IN BASIN KEEP BELIEFS HUSH-HUSH
When you think of pagans, chances are you've got it all wrong.
Many see them as soulless and godless Devil worshippers who cast spells and sacrifice animals.
But at least two local pagans beg to differ with this stereotype, instead offering a more peaceful and community-oriented glimpse at the religious classification, which itself is broad and encompasses a large variety of different beliefs and practices.
In the interest of the family's privacy, they asked to only be identified by their pagan names, Naddya Foxfire and Aratkis, a wife and husband, respectively, who live and work in Odessa.
And they're not alone.

ForestWolf (Cheshire, England) - Email Me

Apart from its slight vagueness and the occasional over-generalisation, this article presents Pagans in a positive light.
Has anyone seen any of the wacko comments below it, on the actual article's site? Some are rather entertaining. My favourite reads, "...three words for this: the father, the son, the holy ghost." I wonder if that particular Christian learnt maths at a school where science teachers say the Earth is only 6000 years old?

Dynnys Derwydd (Lubbock, Texas) - Email Me

. . .just north of the Permian Basin I know how they feel. Lubbock considers itself the "Buckle of the Bible Belt", with, just about literally, a church on every corner. Thankfully the local paper, The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, has covered the local Pagan Pride Day very well and fairly
Still it isn't wise to walk around with a pentagram necklace visible upon one's chest, or even to be out of the broom closet. The number of people here who are "out of the broom closet" is very, very low. Hades, if asked about my religious beliefs I will answer truthfully, "I'm a Gardnerian Wiccan", but I don't wear my religion on my sleeve.
Now not all of Texas is like this. Live in one of the larger metropolitan areas and you can be open about being a Pagan; places like Dallas-Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston. Live in the smaller communities (and Lubbock has around 250,000) then keep your head down.
Just read the posts under the article.

Badger Breaking Ground (Denton, Texas) - Email Me

A positive article, but still, it's also another confusing muddling of what defines a "Pagan" and what separates Wiccans (and others) within that spiritual category. At least those interviewed for the story didn't come off as whackos! The pics were well done and respectable. Do we have a "Do's and Don'ts of speaking with 'The Media'" sitting around here somewhere?

Think about where they are. No wonder they're keeping quiet when it comes to their stupid neighbors.
