"Pagan" Statues Make Return To Arlington

Author: Frank Heinz Source: NBC/DFW (TX)

Title: "PAGAN" STATUES MAKE RETURN TO ARLINGTON
Caelum Moor will once again stand in Arlington -- this time in the Richard Green Linear Park between the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and Cowboys Stadium.
The art project, sadly referred to as "Pagan" in the past, is a series of stones carved from Texas pink granite that somewhat resemble Stonehenge.
That Celtic connection plagued the artwork until it was finally removed and placed into storage in 1997. The city said the layout of the stones have no celestial connection, though the name "Caelum" is derived from a constellation in the southern skies known as the sculptor's tool or chisel. "Moor" refers to the windswept landscapes of Scotland.

I remember when these stones were removed in the late '90's. They used to sit in an industrial park that never became commercially viable. That park featured a pond. A police officer was posted there when the stones were removed and the pond drained. The city was concerned that the pond would contain human remains. That park was next to two major roads. The churches cooked up plenty of rumors of occult activity there. Red granite stones and a pond next to a major freeway (I-20) as a hotbed of occult activity. Gimme a break!
How many of those church goers pray for one group of millionaires chasing a ball to defeat another group of millionaires playing a kids' game?
Texas can be entertaining.

I remember when these stones were taken down and placed in storage. It's great that they are coming back. I live about 10 minutes from the stadiums and that area is very nice.

This is the same metroplex where a law office had a copy of Michaelangelo's "David" in a courtyard where children in buses could see it. The complaints started and now this copy of a Renaissance classic is draped so no one can see the statue's penis.
This is in the same state where Lubbock has freeway construction going on. A local artist created the "Windy Man" a personification of the South Plains' high winds to be placed as part of the freeway, and some idiot went and mutilated the sculpture because he/she/it thought it was "pagan."
Well my fellow Texans. . .Demokratia, democracy, in which "All people are EQUAL under the law" is a pagan concept from ancient Greece. Res Publica, republic, is also a pagan ideal. Even Common Law is drawn more from Greco-Roman law codes than the Bible.
Sheesh, I love Texas, but sometimes I feel we have far too many ignorant people living here.

| Where's The "Pagan" Sculpture? | Jul 1st. at 11:49:17 pm EDT

For that matter, where's the sculpture? I've seen many other so-called "sculptures", and of extremely similar form, which have never been thought of as "Pagan".
Actually, looking at the pictures of the stones, they remind me of the Pictish message/memorial stones in Scotland and Ireland. Y'know, the ones with the Ogham (pronounced "oh-yam") writing on them. Since the majority of the remaining Pictish stones happen to have Christian symbology carved on them, I would say the "sculpture" featured in the article is also "Christian".
It is definitely not "Pagan", no matter its appearance. In fact, it appears to be just a bunch of copies of Pictish stones.

Why was it "sadly" " mistaken as Pagan?
If these were supposed to be " statues" but when they look like blocks of rock and a number of them are arranged in a pattern, well guess its no surprise they would be " mistaken" to be meant to be like Stonehenge or any of the other stone monuments in Europe.
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck but the intent was to be a petunia, maybe the artist missed the mark big time.
The name the artist chose came from Celtic language. The blocks don't look remotely anthropomorphic.
Maybe the artist needs to do some actual education before such a sloppy mistake is made again.
