Park City Academy Hosts Greek Mythology Characters

Author: Frank Fisher   Source: The Park Record (UT)

Title: THE GODS OF MOUNT OLYMPUS

Who's the stripped down guy with wings on his feet in the flower commercials? If you were in Martha Polichette's second grade class, studying Greek Mythology, you would likely know, and know where he was headed with those flowers.

Wednesday, March 28, 12 students portrayed Greek mythology characters during a presentation at the Park City Academy. The portrayal was a culmination of a month of kids choosing a character, researching the character, and preparing a presentation to give to an audience of fellow students, parents and teachers.

Polichette has inspired kids to delve into Greek mythology for 10 years. She said, "There is Mythology all around us, using examples of Zeus, Mercury and the recently celebrated Cupid. "These are stories of how humanity got started," she said. But mainly, she feels the benefits of the month-of-March project come from the research skills, public speaking and teamwork. "They made up their speeches themselves and practiced them at home."

i had a class on Geek Mythology. It was a big turning point in my life introducing me to Paganism and helping to shape my personal beliefs. It was an like a doorway eventually leading to my religion, Witchcraft. Although, i'm not an Hellenist, i still lean heavily on G.M. in my rites. Thank you public school for teaching Greek Mythology!

... not too long ago, but under Communist rule, Greek Mythology was required reading; the students didn't have to resort to digging up scrolls from academic libraries, they could pick up a book in two volumes written by a Romanian author, "Olympian Legends Retold". We so loved that book and the stories in it that we used to play at being gods at home; we felt so privileged to have a Diana living among us! We were thinking 'she's so lucky to already bear the name of a goddess we're going to play!'; the rest of us went by made-up names *sigh*...

As for school plays... well... there were other gods to be honoured at that time, you know, like "the worker and the woman farmer"...

Congratulations to the teacher on opening the minds of children to research, public speaking, and drama all at the same time!!

I suspect that studying the Bible in a Judeo-Christian Mythology class would not be acceptable to most Christians. :)

Children love a challenge and getting involved with the Greek myths and heroes on so many levels is stimulating and educational while also a lot of fun. They will each feel they have accomplished something by their own effort. Kudos to the teacher :)
