Woman Gets 15 Years To Life

Author: Stephen Hunt   Source: The Salt Lake Tribune (UT)

Title: WOMAN GETS 15 YEARS TO LIFE

A woman who fatally stabbed her boyfriend in front of her three children while arguing over a pagan religious ceremony was sentenced to prison Wednesday for 15 years to life.

Monika Ann Dilmaghanian, 34, had pleaded guilty as charged last month to first-degree felony murder for the April 6 death of 24-year-old Nathan D. Harris at a campground near Causey Reservoir.

Prosecutors say Dilmaghanian stabbed Harris once in the heart with a knife she wore in a scabbard around her neck.

Dilmaghanian became upset with Harris because she felt he had improperly performed a "cleansing ceremony" on another knife, which Harris had recently acquired, according to prosecutors.

Peggy Tidwell, who said she was Dilmaghanian's best friend, told news reporters that she, Dilmaghanian and Harris practiced "Asatru," a version of Norse paganism from the Viking Age.

People ARE NOT getting stupider. It is just easier to see their stupidity in the age of communication. People were just as stupid and cruel a thousand years ago as they are now.
Don't take the sensationalism in the article as an excuse to call out persecution. Ignore the idiots and treasure the intellegent.

Domestic Abuse Usually Does Escalate Sep 21st. at 10:54:40 pm EDT

Unfortunately, people often don't listen when warned to get out of the relationship.

Domestic abuse and mental illness cross all cultural, religious, racial, and financial boundaries. People need to know that and stop pretending that this isn't so.

I'd like to see useful and educational information and resources [Web LINK] as a focus in stories reporting such incidents...not a focus on which religion of the nature I just witnessed.

I can't believe that we are having to deal with this sort of thing again and it is irratating to be so misrepresented.

Especially since I draw some of my personal practices from the Asatru Religion and know for a fact that violence is not allowed there either. It is about honor and protecting the innocennt.

Whats up with the whole spirit coming out of the knife and possessing him please last time I checked stabbing someone was a horrible way to get a spirit out of a person.

When is the media going to realize that most of these violent criminals who say these things about being pagan are usually 5150 and believe me I know I work in a mental facility and many of our clients claim the same sort of things until their medications are adjusted and they are feeling better.

It is sad that we are still so badly riddiculed.

We Need To Consider Sep 20th. at 6:47:22 pm EDT

Coming up with a core statement of ethics that we promise to abide by. I've had it up to here with violent, wacked-out criminals claiming to be Pagan. WE DO NOT HURT INNOCENT PEOPLE...period! We need to let these people know that they can NOT claim our religion. These people are ruining our faith's reputation, and we have to put a stop to it. We need to be very vocal in telling people that you can't be a Pagan if you harm innocents.

My heart goes out to the children who had to see this horrible event. I hope this pathetic excuse of a woman gets life for what she's done. Surely, they'll never be the same. She took away their feeling of safety...that should be a crime in itself. How can we expect our children to grow to be loving, kind people when we let people like that be role models. This woman doesn't deserve children. She deserves to spend the rest of her life behind bars.

I'm thoroughly disgusted.

Murder Is Not The Best Way To Settle Anything Sep 20th. at 4:20:29 pm EDT

This one is typical though - intoxication, argument, handy weapon = murder. The addition of a pagan religion only gives the reason she was angry and a better headline.

Got What She Deserves Sep 20th. at 3:06:55 pm EDT

At least this time the headline wasn't "Pagan women stabs man during ritual".

I know a lot of Vox members are going to be critical of the portrayl of Paganism here. Especially the "possessed" part.

I will say that the article is not being bias in any way towards Paganism. It may color some people's perceptions of the religion, but it isn't any worse compared to articles where a Christian or some other mainstream faith does something insane. (I remember there being a story a couple months back where a 19-yr old father tried to microwave his baby. The wife claimed "the Devil possessed him".)

We got our share of crazies too, I'm afraid.
