Inmate Sues For Norse God Worship

Author: Ben Winslow Source: Deseret Morning News

Title: INMATE SUES FOR NORSE GOD WORSHIP
An inmate is accusing the Utah Department of Corrections of denying him his right to practice an ancient Nordic religion while behind bars.
Michael Polk, who is serving time for aggravated assault and robbery, filed the lawsuit against corrections officials in federal court, accusing them of denying him several religious items that he claims are necessary to practice the Asatru religion, which worships ancient Nordic gods like Odin, Thor, Tyr and Heimdal.
"Plaintiff complains that his being denied the right to practice his choice of religion while housed at the Utah State Prison is violating his First Amendment rights," Polk wrote in his lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Does he think the prison has to PROVIDE him with what he wants? He can purchase an "altar cloth" and will be allowed to keep it, same with books. I am sure he has paper for the runes and there must be a paper drinking cup somewhere - they sure aren't giving him mead! You can worship with nothing but your mind, even if you are totally paralized in a dark room. My tax dollars have to feed and clothe him and pay for his medical costs even though I go hungry & without medical care. Maybe I should do as my mother always joked we would do when we could no longer survive - throw a brick through a window of a jewelry store & plead guilty - a cot & 3 hots with medical care!

...it's another jailbird giving the Northern path a bad rap.
I've never heard of a freakin' prayer cloth in the Asatru tradition. Give me a break. He's got a Thor's hammer, they said he could have the lore (books) ; he could make some Runes out of paper bits if he really wanted to. Sounds like a whiner to me.
This kind of thing is what makes the average person associate Asatru with criminals, bikers, white supremacists, and jailbirds.
