Which Witch?

Author: Kelly Ashkettle Source: In Utah This Week (UT)

Title: WHICH WITCH?
The Black Hat Society is a group of Utah Wiccans determined not to take themselves too seriously. These year-round witches take a whimsical approach to their religion, wearing tall, pointy black hats to celebrate who they are.
The group’s yahoo page states: “Worn on the head, Witch hats are symbolic of wisdom and intelligence. The pointed form of the witch’s hat represents the cone of power. The cone of power is associated with the circle, the symbol of the sun, unity, eternity, rebirth and the triangle.”

the link shows part of a pretty cool program featuring a wizards hat that appears to have a 19 year calender of the sun and moon isn't it neat how sometimes these ancient pagan cultures still filter though today.. the black hat society sounds awesome! and reminds me of my dream to have a stitch and witch.. a group of pagan knitters and crocheters to work on projects that help others, like prayer shawls for nursing homes and sweaters for the poor but I digress

a small addition is that the "Witch's" hat is also a symbol of the Goddess.

Actually, they may be based on the wizard's hat which is often depicted as pointed and sometimes decorated with stars and or planetary or astrological signs, as a sign of knowledge and occult power, so they may be right about the symbolism of the Witch's hat. I really loved McGonagal's hat, and the one Gandalf wore as the Gray Wizard was really cool. The round pillbox one Dumbledore wore in the later Potter films seems to be based more on medieval alchemy. Still, it sounds like fun.

and pardon my being a bit silly, but if "pointy hats" were good enough for Minerva McGonnagle, then they're good enough for me! ( grrr I KNOW I misselled that....)

I wonder where they get those hats, they're very nice.
If I was a little braver, I'd wear one myself.

I always thought the hat thing had to do with the style of hat popular for women in general during the time of the witch hunts. I didn't know there was a symbolic meaning, although I'm sure one could always come up with one. Anyway, looks like a fun group. Good to know there are witches in Utah.

to those Utah pagans.Sounds like a rollicking good time. Wouldn't it be fun to have a witchy hat decorating contest? I always loved the witch hats, especially the ones with the crooked and lopsided points. My favorite was the one Professor McGonagall had in Harry Potter. Course mine would perhaps feature some silk flowers in jewel tones, maybe a few well-placed sequins or rhinestones. A nice feather cockade would work too. I can just see it; a parade of witches showing off their cool hats. Should carry the decorating theme tothe brroms too---I did that with a broom one year. It's somewhere in my house.

It's about time that people stopped being so uptight and just have fun. We used to do similar things in a coven I was a part of years ago. We had witch hats and we would celebrate during ritual. We would have real fun. Not everything was "oh so serious not a line or item out of place." That's how it should be.

Please excuse the pirate sound, but it's the only headline I could think of to describe my feelings. I really dislike, hate is too strong a word, as of yet, to describe my feelings about the use of "Which Witch." Even when it is a title. I get really sick of it. Especially when people substitute "witch" for "which." So annoying and unnecessary. It is not cute or funny. Why do they do it? Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there...oh well.
