Interior Secretary Cancels Leases On Federal Land In Utah

Author: Juliet Eilperin Source: Washington Post

Title: INTERIOR SECRETARY CANCELS LEASES ON FEDERAL LAND IN UTAH
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is canceling oil and gas leases on 77 parcels of federal land in Utah, according to sources familiar with the decision, ending a fierce battle over whether to allow energy exploration in the environmentally sensitive area.
The Bush administration conducted the lease sale in December, but environmental groups went to court to block the winning bids encompassing roughly 110,000 acres near pristine areas such as Nine Mile Canyon, Arches National Park and Dinosaur National Monument.

Natural gas is a clean and cheap energy source relevant to acquiring it, and the sites they want are miles from the scenic areas. What would be the harm besides a few pumps where no one could see them and alittle extra road? Now oil could be bad, but the hazards of transporting oil by road are much small than by sea, so it would actually be much safer than offshore drilling. And most of that area is desert any way so if a spill did occur, then the environmental impact is much smaller.

how the energy ceo's and their analyst cronies always threaten the detriment of the economy. Hogwash. They're beating an already dead and pulverized horse. Using the threat of a faltering economy (which we are already experiencing) is just a scare tactic. It's the last resort argument when all other arguments have failed miserably.

"The federal government's Dec. 19 Utah lease sale sparked a second legal controversy as well: In an attempt to derail the auction, University of Utah economics student Tim DeChristopher bid $1.8 million and won 13 of the leases even though he never intended to pay for them.
Federal agents escorted DeChristopher out of the room in the midst of the auction, and the U.S. attorney Brett L. Tolman is considering whether to press charges in the case. "
I'm sure of this sort of thing happening before, and the major charge is one of interfering of lawful commerce. I don't know that the reversal of that auction will get him off the hook. It would have been nice, could he have assembled a consortium, to transfer those leases to the Nature Conservancy.
The Bush Administration was still under the influence of the late Ken Leigh, however, and the pillaging of our economy through Energy Futures Trading was still concealled.
Frankly, if the energy prices were inflated, and are now renormalizing, with Gasoline less than U$3/gallon, it might simply not be worth while to fight the legal hassles offered.

Don't celebrate too much. The oil companies own the patents on engines that run on alternative fuels, and you know THEY don't want those released.

We absolutely need to make the shift away from fossil fuels now. This is a small step in the right direction and is surely good news for all of our critter buddies who live in the areas spared from oil and gas drilling.
Although natural gas is a pretty decent transition fuel (less greenhouse emissions/btu than coal) , sufficient environmental regulations to protect the drilling areas are not in place. And most of the places Ken Salazar took off the leasing lease should not be drilled at all.
So hooray & may the Mothers bless us all.

We shouldn't have to sacrifice our wild places for the sake of a resource that might not even last the century if found and used.
