Unitarianism: A Religion That Hails U.S. Ideals

Author: Bill Maxwell, Syndicated columnist Source: Metrowest Daily

Title: UNITARIANISM: A RELIGION THAT HAILS U.S. IDEALS
When news spread last November that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, headquartered here in Utah's capital, had played a pivotal role in persuading California voters to reject same-sex marriage, many Unitarian Universalists, especially those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, asked the congregation to move its 48th annual general assembly to another city.
But the Rev. William G. Sinkford, then-president of the Boston-based Unitarian Universalist Association, refused to boycott Salt Lake City. Boycotting, or leaving the table, did not fit his governing style or adhere to his theology of "relationships."
"I'm a strong believer that you can only work for change when you are in a relationship," he said.

for the Unitarians! (I was raised one.) I love it that they are going to hold their convention in Salt Lake City.

That the religious right nuts like the Mormons understand is when they loose money or donations. I 'm not saying all Mormons are religious nuts. But the nutty ones only think "money". Boycotting Salt Lake City, moving it to another part of the state that is much friendlier and letting them know why they lost the jobs would be a beginning. This way the people of Utah that at least have brains won't be affected by the loss of jobs and rewarded.

"Note: I have been a Unitarian since 1969."
If his editorial had been less ballanced, he might have wanted to gloss over that detail.
Note, to those seeking appointments as Pagan Chaplains to the Military, Paganism doesn't happen to be a Religion, but Unitarians are willing to minister in the direction of such a class of religions, and don't require a profound worship of St. Gabriel's By-Blow, for admission to Harvard or Yale Theological Semenaries.
A reverend Emerson, grandfather to Thereau's buddy, was the first non-combatant chaplain, in our nation's military, and a Unitarian, unless he was a Universalist. Prior to that, the youngest minister of the community would shoulder arms, and march with any raising of the Minute Men.
If the GLBT want to boycott Mormon Central, over a political issue, how does this encourage inclusion? One of the worst decisions this country made, was to withdraw from the Olympics, after the Kennedy Assasination, when a special effort should have been made. It would make more sense, if the GLBT were to take the time, to appreciate the Book of Moroni, and make a decent impression of themselves.
The real challenge, is whether the Unitarian Universalists can embrace all those religions, who support different prophets as the only prophets.
