Highway Marker Dedicated For Paspahegh Tribe

Author: Melodie N. Martin   Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

Title: HIGHWAY MARKER DEDICATED FOR PASPAHEGH TRIBE

In years past, state historical highway markers described Virginia Indians as heathens and pagans, Chickahominy Tribe Chief Stephen R. Adkins said. Karenne Wood, a member of the Monacan Tribal Council, recalled similar innuendoes.

"They'd say something like, 'Here's where the white, non-native people were massacred by the savages.' There were these negative overtones," she said.

But recent efforts have been made to right those wrongs.

About three dozen people gathered at the Chickahominy Tribal Center in Charles City County yesterday to dedicate a new historical highway marker honoring the Paspahegh Indians, whose main town was attacked in 1610 by English settlers from nearby Jamestown.

The marker will be installed on the north side of state Route 5, about a mile east of the Chickahominy River Bridge in Charles City.

It Is Never Good Aug 12th. at 5:25:44 pm EDT

To alter the stories of the past to make anyone look better or worse than they were. No one group of people were universally good or evil. It is impossible to learn good lessons from lies about the past - we must know what we are capable of, both good and evil, if we are to improve ourselves.

This is a start. The settlers of this country were often guilty of horrible things. The native peoples of this country were also human and far from perfect beings - they, too did things they would rather forget today.

Truth is what we learn from. It is not possible to return to the past and change things, we can only learn to act in better ways than the ancestors we would rather forget.

that what actually happen will be written into history. I hope it will be in the history books soon.

Peace Out
