Where’s The Love?

Author: Aaron Stern Source: The Potomac Almanac (VA)

Title: WHERE’S THE LOVE?
Sleeping in a crate at the Montgomery County Humane Society with three other orphaned cats, 3-month-old Lark would seem to be the model of an adoptable cat. She is fuzzy, friendly toward people, and the domestic shorthair kitten has her life in front of her.
There’s just one small problem with Lark: she’s black. In the numbers game that is animal adoption, that detail moves Lark and other cats like her to the proverbial back of the adoption line.
National statistics show that black cats are the least frequently adopted cats at animal shelters, and that trend holds true at the Montgomery County Humane Society.
“Generally the cats that have been here the longest, they’re always black cats,” said J.C. Crist, the president and CEO of the Montgomery County Humane Society. Crist’s group is taking measures to fight that trend: this month the County’s Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees for those who adopt a black cat.

He's naughty, nuts and absolutely manic but we love him all the same.
He's been with us for twelve years and has an incredible love of kittens having welcomed three into his home throughout his life.
He's the boss of our little cat group but he's very laid back about it, providing all the others know that he's boss.
When we got him from the pet shop he literally chose us by literally leaping out the cage and into my mum's arms.
Out of all the cats he's the most loyal and affectionate and goes a long way to stand up for his moggy friends, probably because he feels a sense of responsibility towards them.
I don't know how anyone could not want a black cat. They're a little mad in my experience and they are dominant little fighters but they are probably more loyal than many other types of cat.
But that's just my experience.

I love black cats. I was sort-of adopted by one a while back. He had the most attractive face of any cat I've ever seen, and a brilliant personality. He was as daft and soft as anything - particularly around me... he but really had some fire in him if anyone provoked him! If I were Odin preparing warriors for Ragnarok, I'd consider employing that moggy to train their fighting skills! He certainly had endless personality, charm and character, and is sorely missed.
I don't know why anyone would not want a black cat. They're definitely extremely lucky things to have cross your path.

I'd be the "crazy cat lady with all those black cats."
I really do wish people would get over themselves and the crap about black cats being "unlucky" or "bad." I think they're beautiful.

I do believe I meant rogue kittys, not rouge kittys, although I suppose I could rub him down with henna.

My wife and I just got taken over by a fourth cat, a little black kitten we found hiding behind our garage. Despite my previous declarations of "no more damn pets"- we already had three cats, a rottweiler and a ball python- I was the one who fell sucker for this guy. And it's a good thing too, cause he's the devil. Or at least a major imp. He's all of four lbs. and has the three twelve lb. adult cats terrorized. He likes to ride my 90 lb. rottie's head like a little demonic jockey. And jump up, bat at the dog's head and steal food from his bowl while he's eating. Luckily for him the dog thinks he's great. On a more serious note, we have done rescue work at the local shelter and it seems even here in N.J. black cats are very difficult to adopt out because of the typical "scary occult" overtones associated with black cats. I would suggest anyone looking to adopt a cat should consider a black one, cause otherwise they get passed over and eventually euthanized. And don't forget to spey and/or neuter! Or maybe rouge wild demon kitties will take over your backyard too!

I always thought a black cat crossing my path was great, usualy because they tended to pad over for a cuddle. My favourite cat is ginger, but I do think black cats are so beautiful. The few times I've adopted cats, it's been primerily because I liked the cat, and it liked me, colour was of secondary importance.

He's my little black fuzzy buddy that wandered into my yard one night and found himself a sucker. He's a friendly little cat who thinks he's a dog (I have a dog that found me in a similar way) . My family thinks I'm nutz for having a black cat. They'd never have one. Go figure. Look where I live.

Consider the area being reported on: Virginia. Home state of groups run by Right-Wing Conservative Christian Fundamentalists. Of course black cats are not going to be adopted there... Everyone "knows" black cats and "evil" witches go hand-in-hand! Funny how turning a blind eye to pain and suffering, in the name of "saving souls", is somehow "good"....
If I could somehow afford it, and find a way to transport them here (and find a good home for them all) , I would adopt every black cat in every shelter in the entire state of Virginia.

When i went to the humane society here that diddn't seem to be a problem. I even asked if they had a hard time adopting out black cats and they said no but that they wouldn't adopt out a black cat close to Halloween. My Pika, a longhair black kitty was hit a couple weeks ago and I told my daughter that I would rather not get a black cat because she wasn't "replacing" Pika. When we went to the shelter a little Black kitten chose us. Bella had more personality than all the other cats there, she is a definate joy and great playmate for our Miles, a large black and white kitty.
