ACLU Protests Removal Of Bible Verses

Author: The Associated Press Source: Lawrence Journal-World and News

Title: ACLU PROTESTS REMOVAL OF BIBLE VERSES
Prisoner and free-speech advocates are demanding a written guarantee that inmates at a Virginia jail can receive letters containing religious material after a prisoner said his mail was censored.
The American Civil Liberties Union, its Virginia chapter and several other civil, religious and prisoner rights organizations sent a letter to Rappahannock Regional Jail Superintendent Joseph Higgs Jr. requesting that the issue be resolved without litigation.

The gross ban of "Internet material" is equally problematic as that of "religious materials".
That restriction would include this very story, about how the fascist thug dimwit prison administrators routinely violate the law, and need to be repeatedly challenged over their illegal actions.
It could include anything from a printout of the obituary notice of a family member, to news coverage of a child's school activities or awards. It could include legal research or political information on efforts to change prison administrators, get corrupt kangaroo court "judges" off the bench as many in Virginia should be removed, and many other forms of highly protected speech.
It would seem this prison used a standard of illegal censorship to target anything that was a nuisance for guards to review. The state has an obligation to not just pass "strict scrutiny test" highly protected speech content (that can be censored ONLY by a showing of "compelling state interest" and when done narrowly, never with a broad brush, but to pass to inmates all materials it cannot demonstrate pose a legitimate rational threat to institution or inmate safety or security.
Perhaps some of the state employees at this facility (among many others) should be offered beds for the night, and have their pay adjusted to 10 cents a day, with duties adjusted to making license plates? When in effect they're conspirators in a massive civil rights conspiracy, those perpetrators deserve to be convicted as felons, not rewarded by the state and held above the law.

No softy for prisoners' rights here but how we treat prisoners, minors, elderly and the handicapped provides markers for the health of a society.
Separation of Church and State. We should see neither prisoners put through programs that push Christianity, or any particular religion, on them nor censorship of religious literature sent/accessible to them.
