Vermont Governor Wants Nude Statue Out Of Office

Author: Wilson Ring, Associated Press Source: Tampa Bay Online

Title: VERMONT GOVERNOR WANTS NUDE STATUE OUT OF STATEHOUSE OFFICE
Gov. James Douglas is doing some tidying up in his office and one thing he thinks can go is a table lamp that sometimes makes him red-faced.
The lamp, installed on his desk recently as part of a Statehouse restoration project, is a replica of a famous 19th century nude statue that cost $2,500 and is plugged into an overhead chandelier.
"The governor does not object to the art," said Douglas spokesman Jason Gibbs. "It may, frankly, be awkward to explain why there is a nude Greek slave on the governor's desk to a third-grader."

If it's his office he should be able to decorate it however he wants without having to give anyone an explanation as long as it's within his normal budget. And if he doesn't like a desk lamp why should he be forced to use it?

Well, it seems this is the same guy who lost 144 k in renewable energy sources. [Web LINK] Problem, if you are a fiscally responsible anything, ya just don't lose, even a penny. Try it for yourselves, tell your creditors you lost 144k due to a clerical error.

He could always make some 'clothing' for it out of sticky notes for when 3rd graders visit.
Just a thought.

| Vermont Governor And The Nude | Dec 11th. at 5:38:28 pm EST |

It's nice to know that Montpelier, Vermont has no social issues that need to be dealt with. There must not be any needy families, social injustices, crime, or job losses in that part of the country. Maybe I should move there! It would be nice to live somewhere like that - the only issue of the day is does the nude lamp stay or go? I bet it'll take 20 contractors/electricians, 3 town meetings, and a $50, 000.00 contract to remove the damn thing too. Aaaah..... politics! I did send a suggestion of auctioning it on E bay!

Tell the third graders that it's a symbol for the Abolitionist movement.
And move it someplace where it can't get knocked over, or commission someone to make a base that it can be attatched to.
And quit bitching about the little things. I wish my biggest problem was a piece of art that wasn't my style.

by Fred Lawrence (Kansas) - wc_xemail

In life there are some matters of great importance and others of no importance. The lamp sitting on the desk of a state governor is of no importance. What he wants and doesn't want there is up to him. Such matters just aren't newsworthy. They are utterly trivial.
Incidentally, I have seen copies of "The Greek Slave" in an art museum and it's a beautiful sculpture.

This is not an original work of art. It is a lamp replicating the gas line that used to connect the gaslight chandelier to a desk light. It has not been sitting there since VT became a state. A restoration consultant though it would be a good idea to add it recently.
It would be akward to explain a chained nude woman to 3rd graders. The combination of nudity and bondage plus a prominent spot on the desk of a working office makes it a misplaced piece.
Crying censorship over such a minor event lessens the case for real govermental supression. Find More info -- HERE

"It may, frankly, be awkward to explain why there is a nude Greek slave on the governor's desk to a third-grader."
The answer is in the article: it is an icon of the abolitionist movement. That lamp is a history lesson waiting to happen.

| What Are People Like This So Afraid Of? | Dec 11th. at 9:54:46 am EST |

by Mari-Anne (NYC - Staten Island) - wc_xemail

Sheesh, I mean really. Now I've never been into false modesty....even as a child and young woman. What is the fear behind this ridiculous sense of modesty and virtue? Are they afraid that if everyone is exposed to the nude form that we'll all go nuts and start having orgies in the streets?
Better orgies than wars if you ask me. But it's a ridiculous notion that nudity corrupts. But nude statues in Washington were covered up too because Ashcroft felt they were innaproprite and didn't want to be seen in photographs with nude women. Hmmmmmm, Dr. Freud.......care to make a diagnosis?
I mean, if this guy doesn't want a nude statue in his office, fine.........but I think that attitude speaks volumes about his emotional health if you ask me.
