Judge Says JOHN316 Plate Violates Guidelines

Author: AP Source: WESH (FL)

Title: JUDGE SAYS JOHN316 PLATE VIOLATES GUIDELINES
A federal magistrate has recommended against issuing a vanity license plate with a religious theme to a Vermont man, at least for now.
But the magistrate also denied the state's bid to have the case dismissed.
Vermont regulations state that license plates are not allowed to have a combination of letters or numbers that refer in any language to race, religion, color, deity, ethnic heritage, gender, sexual orientation, disability status or political affiliation.

who are they to say JOHN316 conveys a religious message. Could be the guy has a son named John born on March 16th. Unless a vanity plate spells out words to be found in the dictionary, can the DMV really say what those combos of letters and numbers means? As evidenced in Toy Story 2, if someone wants LZTYBRN, what do you think it means? Lies To Your Brain, Liz Thanks You Brian, or Al's Toy Barn? :-)

I find that idea ridiculous. It is not an issue of endorsing religion. I once had a plate that said HIPYCHCK, didn't mean the gov't was endorsing hippies. However, they aren't only limiting plates based on religion, so I don't see this as opposing religion, either. They see the need to limit what is expressed on plates, and they have guidlines, that's all there is to it. The problem is that it is a Christian who wants something not allowed by law, and they are crying foul. But it isn't, anymore than the state not allowing something like, say, 'GAYSUCK'. They wouldn't allow that, either. Besides, as someone else pointed out, the person can place all kinds of bumper stickers on their car, just like many other people do.

i think it does imply state support of whatever... its not saying you cant have a religious theme on your vehicle... just that area.. so i personally think its correct... but if its to vague of a connection... i do see other vanitys plates coming.. much more direct then that.. maybe wicca=1 lol i would love to see that sort of thing personnally.. especially on a xtian vehicle..
