Idyll Banter: Goodnight, Moon. Happy Solstice.

Author: Chris Bohjalian Source: Burlington Free Press

Title: Idyll Banter: Goodnight, Moon. Happy Solstice.
The winter solstice arrives Wednesday, a moment on the calendar that has been both celebrated and feared ever since humans first stood erect, contemplated the difference between night and day, and wondered why all the world's parking spaces disappear this time of the year. I like the solstice and think it's one of those moments that would get a lot more attention if it didn't occur in the midst of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year's. That's a lot of ritual to compete with. Besides, solstice cards are really difficult to find.
I know. I went to a card shop at a mall and asked the young woman who worked there where the store kept the solstice cards. I might just as well have asked Nicole Richie to explain to me the genome map of her ex-pal Paris Hilton's Chihuahua.

Miranda (Bradenton, Florida) - Email Me

And a good thing that some of the major e-card providers (specifically 123greetings.com and care2.com) have recognized the need for solstice cards for those of us who can't get to a shop carryin "pagan cards". I still remember walking into a Hallmark shop one October whose sign proudly proclaimed "cards for every occasion" and asking the perplexed manager where the Samhain cards were! *grin*
