Not Just Words

Author: Bob Audette Source: Brattleboro Reformer (VT)

Title: NOT JUST WORDS
Though Vermont has a reputation for being tolerant and accepting, one local high school student recently learned that disrespect has many faces. And sometimes it can be scary.
The student, a 15-year-old Marlboro resident who practices Wicca, never expected to have her beliefs attacked in the form of an offhand joke.
"I told him several times to knock it off, but he didn't stop," said Gwen Williams, about a classmate who was quoting from a Monty Python movie.
"She's a witch," she said, repeating what he said to her. "Burn her."
"The matter was investigated and dealt with," said Brattleboro Union High School principal James Day, adding that because of confidentiality requirements, he couldn't discuss it in any more detail, nor identify the offending student.

I was called a witch and "devil girl" in my grade-school days, even before I knew I was Pagan. Kids are mean. The school obviously has rules about it too. It's terribly sad when it happens, but I dealt with it by playing along....hissing at them when they said it, asking if they would donate some hair for rituals later, etc. It got me in trouble, but I went to a Christian prep school at the time. Whatcha gonna do.

"Additional offenses are listed simply as "any consequences they deem appropriate and reasonable."
Having to search through Python's Search for the Holy Grail would likely be better than having to search through my version, if you're looking for a quick remedy.
"Of course I'm a Witch, and am hoping to build a bridge when I die."
"Fed any Lions lately?"
"You mean you haven't any tiny little rocks, in this school?"
As Whistler once told Buffy, "tain't what y'r thrown, but how you catch."
This gives me an idea. Hollywood could do a comedy, based on Daniel; The Emperor could look an awful lot like The Shrub.

In all honesty, even I would take that with a laugh. I know for a fact that the vast majority of us here not only know that scene, we own the special edition and laugh hard at that entire scene. I didn't look at the whole article but it seems to me that the kid was being a weiner and crying to the teacher/parents. One thing I learned is that when you own right up to the picking, it removes a lot of the value it has against you.
Example: I was called a fag through most of my high school years by a couple jocks. And it's not like I'm metrosexual or anything. I'm just a big guy without a macho attitude and a dislike for football. That didn't sit right with them. One day I finally relized that even if I walked down that school hall with two supermodels under my arms, I would still get called a fag. So that's when I just threw my hands in the air and took on the attitude "Yep, I'm a fag. You've got a problem with that?" After a while I noticed that the term wore out. It was the whole "Stop it!" routine that got them off, not the word itself.
What that kid could have done was responded with something like "We burn because we're long, hard and made of wood." Crude? Yes, but it could very much cause the kids who were doing the picking to see that this kid has a sense of humor and we all know that crude one-liners like that can get you put in the O.K. book with the class troublemakers.
If an insult was devering, he could say "Us Witches may weigh as much as a duck, but your mom weighs like a dump truck."
Either way, the whole "Stop it you guys!" bit guarentees it won't.

the school handled it to the parent's and child's satisfaction. They are who count in the matter, however; we are overlooking an important fact here. Here in the south no types of threats are tolerated, none. We mustn't forget Columbine High school and the tragic events that happened there. If the young Witch had not stood up for herself (Goddess Bless her courage!!) who knows where this may have ended up. Any death threats within school should not be tolerated under any circumstances. As far as quoting Monty Python, that may be true, but still inappropriate. I hope that the young man in question has learned from his mistake, and hopefully learned a little more tolerance for others.......just my thoughts on this one.
Brightest Blessings! Elwin Shadowstrider ) O (

I wouldn't give this to a little kid to sleep with. It would give them nightmares.

While I am happy for her and the way the school handled it, I only wish that sentiment could be spread a little further. Monty Python is great!

that the girl and her parents are happy with the way the school handled it, since they are the ones who count. It sounds like the school was very respectful. However, as a parent, I think I may have overreacted if it had been my daughter. I probably would have wanted the kid suspended for making a death threat. You know, being protective of your child can turn even a rational adult into a hysteric, lol.
It's funny, but for some reason we don't expect there to be such incidents in the North. We expect them in the Bible Belt, and yet everyone here has been great. The only problem one of my kids had was up in MD. Just goes to show that you can't count on sterotypes.
And I just love Monty Python and the Holy Grail!! Watch out for the Bunny :D

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail," obviously, is one of my favorite movies. It screws with christian mythology every other scene.
That being said, "stop" should have meant "stop" with that kid. He should have explained where the line came from then offered to let her borrow the DVD.
