Hope For Peace, Love, Understanding

Author: Rev. Iris Crain   Source: The Olympian (WA)

Title: HOPE FOR PEACE, LOVE, UNDERSTANDING

I am constantly surprised at how many people visit the various pagan and Wiccan rituals and religious observances in Olympia expecting something from a Brothers Grimm tale. I guess I shouldn't be surprised when they leave disappointed and I never see them again.

Having chosen this belief nearly 20 years ago, I have faced prejudice, discrimination and outright hatred in a time and a culture that prides itself on being civilized. It's painful and frustrating trying to explain for the third time in a given day that Wicca is a peaceful and civilized religious choice just like any other and we are not to be feared. But it's something that needs to be done, because even in a beautiful place such as Olympia, peace, love and understanding must to be worked at, not assumed.

Peace, love and understanding ! How wonderful it would be if all these could be found from nothing more than the inner spirit. Sadly, they all seem "bookmarked" to belief in one faith or another and not to the will of the mortal being to find such feelings from within themselves. Its great that this person feels that working at this will bring results, everything in this life has to be worked at for sure. Certainly, hope is there when all else fails but the love has to come from within and has to start with love of the self. Peace is what we all strive for, as it races about like an illusive star waiting to be discovered. Sadly again, faiths and beliefs are the very barrier that keeps it just out of sight. Understanding is what we all try to aspire to, but it is difficult to understand much of what goes on in the name of faith these days. Reality seems far removed from the authors mind, so maybe Olympia is her ideal and not her reality. So all that leaves is hope. I do so hope that she sees her "ideal" take shape, but I rather feel it will not come about as a matter of any faiths. I am Pagan, but do not look to my faith and beliefs for these feelings. Instead I try to find them within myself, inside/out instead of outside/in. Bright Blessings.

I Think She's Trying To Reach Her Community Aug 11th. at 7:06:27 pm EDT

Not ours. They capatalized Wicca when referring to the specific religion and did not when referring to her "generalized wicca" statement. She is reaching out to her local community, trying to show them that her group and those who visit for pagan faire are really normal people. It has to be said over and over again in many places because christians are very closed minded and have to be hit with that brick repeatedly. The article does not show pagans as idiots or airy-fairy types and that is always good.

Someone needs a new editor. Many words are separated (lik e t his) , and there are several places where "Pagan" and "Wicca" aren't capitalised (again, the reason why I won't capitalise "christian") . It also seems like it belongs in a newspaper 20 years ago during the so-called "satanic panic."
