Youths Bond Over Religion At Camp

Author: Steve Maynard Source: The News Tribune (WA)

Title: YOUTHS BOND OVER RELIGION AT CAMP
Young people from six faith groups prayed and played together this week at a camp on Key Peninsula, learning to respect their differences while finding much in common.
The seventh- through ninth-graders tackled tough topics, like the negative stereotypes people have of different faith groups. As the sun glistened off the waters of Glen Cove at Camp Seymour, they watched people of other faiths practice their beliefs through devotions, one quoting Henry David Thoreau.
Eighteen Christians formed the largest group. Some of them and their leaders acknowledged some truth to the stereotype that Christians try to convert non-Christians, believing there’s only one way to heaven.
But they pointed to a wide spectrum of Christianity, from the conservative end to the liberal side.
Shelby Woods, 14, talked about her beliefs as a Wiccan. She said the stereotype that Wiccans are witches – good witches – has some truth to it.

... the lone voice of skepticism here, but will the lessons stick? That's the important question. Will these children be strong enough in their new found revelations to withstand the onslaught of adults, some of whom are the religious leaders in their respective communities, and peers who tell them that they are going to suffer the fires of torment from a wrathful god for believing that a person of a different faith deserves their understanding and acceptance?
It is my fervent hope that they do, and that they are able to pass on these most precious lessons (out of the mouths of babes and all that) . But the realist in me says that, eventually, they will be refitted with their custom blinders. And that is sadder to think about than if they had never attend camp in the first place.

I just wish there were many more of these camps. Even the cost was reasonable.

A motion picture should be made of this camp and shown in theaters as a double feature. The other motion picture shown would be Jesus Camp. What a contrast .

I think I would have loved that as a kid. When I have children of my own I hope there are camps like that I can send them too. It's one thing to teach your child about other faiths, it's a whole new thing for them to talk with and interact with people who follow them.

...if tolerance is to be taught, teach the children. I would have loved to send my son to something as diverse as this. I do have but one question however; why is it the adults can't do the same? Why is it the adults wish to teach tolerance and really don't practice the same? I only wish I knew...... Brightest Blessings to all!! Elwin Shadowstrider ) O (

How is it that the Muslim kid said he learned that "all the religions are rooted in the belief in one God" when the Wiccan kid at the very least obviously does not believe that?

This is the way life was meant to be lived. Learning and growing with each other in peace and harmony.
I would gladly send each of my three children to a camp like this, I teach them to learn and examine each and every spiritual movement on the planet and find the path that Means something to their soul.
What a great way to do that!!! Blessings of the Day.

the kind of summer camp I'd want to attend. Too bad I'm too old to be a camper and too young to be staff...
