Why I’m A Harry Potter Convert

Author: Celeste Flint   Source: The Daily (University of Washington)

Title: WHY I’M A HARRY POTTER CONVERT

I graduated from a fundamentalist Christian high school that saw Harry Potter as the biggest threat to a child’s healthy upbringing since the invention of birth control.

Picking up Harry Potter for the first time gave me a feeling I think a pre-teen might have drinking their father’s beer with a friend behind the backyard fence.

I was betraying my cultural upbringing, but the act did not result in the rejection of my faith. Instead, I found that I identified with many of the book’s values and think most people, especially Christians, should too.

So, hold the torch angry parents and teachers alike, and let’s work out why Harry Potter might be more valuable than bonfire material.

Warning labels would be ignored. Sort of like that old PSA: Illiterite? Call 555-5555

The deep end of a world they don't understand? Ignorance can do this...

Uhh... Harry Potter ain't the deep end.

We who live in the magical world know it is the world underlying the mundane world, children are trained not to see it in order to be 'normal'.

oh come on now... that was just horrid. When will they figure out that they to are Pagans... just dilusional. As soon as that happens all these "articles" will disappear... cause guess what.. no one will care... what so ever. With them being Pagan again, like they are now despite there "christianizes" of their Pagan elements. But God forbid they do a religious study and compare the elements with their own brand. But then again at least we as a whole know our faith enough to do be able to look into the egyption buddist norse ect religions and see common elements. Trust me if you havent done so... do yourself a favor and look at the Egyption elements that are in the Christian faith. Because NOT ONE element is theirs originally. Not a single one, other then whats not actually in their astrology book they call the bible.

he makes a good argument for potter but fails to go a step further and correct his gross misconceptions about witch craft and paganism in general, oh well.....for another day perhaps. Can only bend ones ideology so much at once.

Poor Christian. Had such good intentions for this article and managed to mess it all up at the end through ignorance.

Was pretty amusing though. Helped to brighten my morning.

...the author showed what little she knows about Witchcraft and its history.

Most of the "Witches who were either burnt or hanged were not Witches at all. Many were poor old widows who could not get about as much.
The stereotype of the elderly recluse who casts spells was simply like a lot of very elderly women today. Their bodies and minds become weaker as they age so they cannot move about as much as they would like and some may have lost their ability to communicate orthink properly. My late grandmother was a modern day version of this (without being put before a trial and burnt at the stake of course) as she kept thinking she was a young girl.
A Witch by medieval standards was anyone who was out of place. This could be an elderly woman or it could be a single mother. In fact if you were a woman you could be put on trial for Witchcraft. And because no one was allowed to speak for your defense. (If they did they would have been burnt alongside you.) you were guilty upon accusation.
Today Witchcraft is not a cult. (Although there will be some who practice for the wrong reasons.)
While standing up for Harry Potter is a start, she should really start doing research before writing as if she knows everything about the Craft.

hahahahahaha... yeah ok... so i thought this was going to be a resonable article... WRONG! i laughed out loud and almost literally fell on the floor @

first laugh: "Cultural changes frighten fundamentalist Christians for two reasons. The first is that many American Christians, like all Americans, have a feeling of entitlement when things don’t go their way." Yes but yes cultural changes TERRIFY fundies... but NOT all Americans have feelings of entitlements when things dont go there way... what i've witnessed is that MOSt NON-xian Americnas dont, while most Xian americans do.. but one should never use all inclusive words like ALL in any article claimint to be truthful

"Second, Christianity as a whole is one of the most culturally flexible religions out there. The average Christian isn’t a fat, white preacher in a Mercedes, it’s an African living in a dirt-floor hut. "

talk about racial stereotypes.... she disprooved the very point she was trying to make. Anyone ever see TD JAKES? uh hello!! he certainly doesnt live in a hut.

"Several churches are reminded of witchcraft cults when random curses, like a twisted nail pounded through a Bible, find their way on church doorsteps." thats not a curse its a prank

ughhh please.. how does this dribble get printed????

anyone know when the latest movie comes out on DVD? cause its getting "thick" again.

What? Oct 11th. at 12:56:59 pm EDT

Zianna Elanesse (Lusby, Maryland) - Email Me

This writer states that some Christians believe in witches, "not the burn at the stake in the middle ages kind of witches, but the sacrifice small animals kind". This view of witches is the same 'devil worshipping witch' crap from the dark ages that still exists in fundie circles, and why 'witches' were burned at the stake.
The start of the article was great, and she should have ended the article without adding the last half and showing she is still a fundie at heart.
Blessed Be,
Zianna

This Article Lost Its Way… Oct 11th. at 12:04:27 pm EDT

Wow, this author actually seemed to be open minded and objective until she started spouting ridiculous propaganda. She speaks of “witchcraft” as being synonymous with some sort of brainwashing cult. She states that “those trying to get out of witchcraft often show distinctive problems”. How so? She makes a vague reference to churches being cursed by “witchcraft cults” via twisted nails??? It would appear that Ms. Flint is not entirely free of the Fundy programming that she received at high school. It may be the case that those trying to get out of “Christian cults” often show distinctive problems, such as an utter lack of objectivity.
