Students Learn Pain Of Discrimination Firsthand

Author: James Joyce III Source: Yakima Herald-Republic (WA)

Title: STUDENTS LEARN PAIN OF DISCRIMINATION FIRSTHAND
When Lauren Sandlin, 14, had an "X" taped to her back this week while standing in the lunch line at St. Paul Cathedral School in Yakima, the eighth-grader felt she was being treated unfairly.
Sandlin and other members of the class who were marked with an X were told to go to the back of the line until everyone else had been served. Then all the marked students were told to sit in a separate area of the cafeteria, and were not allowed to get together with their friends and usual lunch groups.
"It didn't feel good to be picked out of the group," Sandlin said Friday at the conclusion of a four-day exercise designed to teach students about discrimination. The experience gave Sandlin and her fellow students a little glimpse into the impact discrimination has on oppressed people.

It sounds like it was a very good lesson for the children. This is surprising when you consider the fact that it was a Catholic school.
I have been to that same churchback in 1996, but not for worship. They had a wonderful piano concerto with music by Franz Lizt. Perhaps, the staff at St. Paul Cathedral are more open minded than most other church staff.

What some of the other posters below have described is the offshoots of the invention of Jane Elliott, an Iowa school teacher who in 1968 tried to help her 3rd grade class understand why Martin Luther King was killed the day before. To do that she had to help them understand discrimination.
Read the whole story at the link below and if you can see the PBS documenatary. By the way, last I heard she is still teaching this lesson, only now she is teaching it to adults who work in the prison systems.

My high school sociology teacher used to do the same type of lesson, having part of the class wear arm bands to single them out. The lesson lasted as long as a week. They were treated differently, couldn't use certain drinking fountains, and could only use one certain restroom. I don't know how many classes the teacher used this lesson on, but after my freshman year the school administration stopped it, saying it was too mean.

When I was in grade 4 at a small, rural, entirely white, Canadian elementary school our teacher gave us a similar assignment -- based on the colour of our eyes. Because her eyes were brown, the brown-eyed students got "preferential" treatment -- the blue- and green-eyed students were the group "discriminated" against. We were made to sit in seperate groups, we weren't allowed to play with brown-eyed students (and vice-versa) and so on.
The "experiment" started in the morning and was to run for the whole day. At first it was a novelty (especially for the brown-eyed students) , but by noon everybody was upset... and by the time the lunch break was over most of the students were openly defying the non-association order. After lunch our teacher called off the experiment and we had a long discussion about racism, which none of us had ever experienced -- living in a predominantly white area of Canada there simply wasn't any racial diversity.
In retrospect, it was pretty mild. But it had an enormous effect on a class full of nine-year olds -- and I think it was a positive learning experience for all of us... especially since it really drove home the point that discrimination based on an arbitrary physical trait is actually incredibly stupid.

The one that first comes to mind is the sidekick of Huckleberry Hound, OH ME OH MY OH DEAR. Once again the catlick church and its minions have managed to jump on the PC ( and that aint personal computer) bandwagon and dodge the bullet.
They again decry the " dreadful way black americans" were treated without taking any responsibility for their part in other, far more life threatening acts of discrimination.
Let Us reflect on the facts of History. Our European ancestors did not make the black africans slaves. Full stop end of story.
The black africans were slaves when they left africa. they were the "spoils of war". The same as various peoples have been throughout recorded history. Yes even the much vaunted "founding fathers " of xianity owned slaves.
Now let Us bring this to a more recent date.
Timeline: early 1800's ( think Lewis and Clark)
Manifest Destiny, The belief that WHITE XIANS have the right to everything they want.
Mid- 1800's . Trail of Tears. If you dont know what this is. Google is your friend.
Mid to late 1800's. The only good Indian is a dead Indian.
Late 1800;s to mid 1900's. Reservation schools run by various sects of Jebus shouters.
This being the most recent and in some cases still being enforced and practiced is the area I will expound on.
Children taken by force from their homes and interred in "schools" run by various "sects/cults", of xianity. Mostly Jesuit , Dominican and Presbyterian.
Children who had their hair forcibly cut. Were subjected to various toxic " medications". Were beaten , starved, and tortured for speaking their native language. All I might add in the name of an " all loving Gawd". Not to mention the sexual tortures that were perpetrated on them by priests and Nuns alike.
To this day there are places that still proudly display signs like, " No Indians".
So Please carry on. We will not " cry to the sky's".
We are Proud peoples. We will carry on. We will " endevore to persevere".
We will never be as the Black Africans , whining and sniveling , " they called me nigger, they called me .... .
I am now and have been for many years what the frog call,
Woods Nigger.

It's a creative exercise. Now let's see what happens when this Catholic school discriminates against the children of Pagans or any other religion that is not the same as theirs. I wonder if the children will remember their lesson then.

In today's age, kids cannot visualize what it was like just barely 40 years ago.
Of course, discrimination is still practiced, but not so openly and behind a veil of the Internet in several cases.
May these children be true to their hearts from this lesson.

What a great way to teach children about discrimination. I hope the teachers and parents learned something also. Blessed Be
