School Officials Dispute Claim That Event Was Religious

Author: The Olympian   Source: The Olympian (WA)

Title: SCHOOL OFFICIALS DISPUTE CLAIM THAT EVENT WAS RELIGIOUS

South Sound school district spokesmen said sending students to an event featuring the Dalai Lama on Monday provided a rare opportunity for them to see a Nobel Peace Prize winner and did not violate the concept of separation of church and state.

North Thurston spokeswoman Courtney Schrieve said teachers were using the Buddhist leader's Seeds of Compassion curriculum to discourage harassing behavior.

this event wasn't "religous" from what i read... he's a nobel peice price winner... and he doenst "shove" religion down anyone's throat.

to a point. The big difference between most other religions and Christianity is that most other religions aren't trying to recruit it's listeners.

When the Dali Lama speaks, it's not from a perspective of trying to draw others into Buddhism. He's pretty confident that those meant for that path will find it. But the Pope, especially the current Pope, that's another story. To allow someone who believes that their path is "The Only Way to Salvation" to present those beliefs, in that fashion, to young and impressionable minds may not be wise.

Put into perspective: You have a young, impressionable 10 year old, who's parents might be Pagan or Buddhist, or follow a Native American Shamanic path, whatever. You put them in a room full of a bunch of other young, impressionable 10 or 11 year olds, most of who's parents are probably Christian, being lectured to by someone like the Pope... lets remember for a moment that the Pope has recently denounced all other paths as false and their followers "misguided", and that he's driving The Church back into the dark ages. What effect do you suppose that will have on the children in that room who are not Christian... or even Catholic, for that matter?

I'm all for allowing my child to learn about every other path he's interested in learning, and encouraging him to learn more. I'm all for him learning about Christianity. But from more open-minded Christians, like his grandparents. I even asked his grandmother to baptise him. I'll draw the line at Christian priests (because, quite frankly, I've lost all faith and trust in them, and with very good reason.) That includes the Catholic hierarchy, who allowed child abuse to continue for years and years within The Church, and *encouraged it* by simply moving pedophile priests around from parish to parish, giving them ample opportunity to find more victims. Then we have Ratzinger going back to "the old ways" and preaching damnation to "non-believers", using scare tactics to try and keep people from waking up and leaving The Church....

Expose my child to that? Not on your life.

This Would Be An Event For Them To Remember Apr 16th. at 12:34:24 am EDT

The "WALL"......... Apr 15th. at 9:13:30 pm EDT

There is a difference about LEARNING about religions and being PREACHED to. In this case, the students were learning from the leader of a large religious group, however, he was NOT preaching to them or trying convert them, so this does not cross the WALL of Church/State, IMO.

Actually, the separation of church and state business is proving to be a convenient excuse for those xtians railing about other faiths. They are only griping when someone uses it against them. Actually, the Dalai Lama isn't as religious as he is political. And if religion wasn't mentioned and he wasn't calling for prayer- then you really couldn't call it religious.

Xians Are Just Pissed Because Apr 15th. at 4:33:00 pm EDT

Mordechai (Edmond, Oklahoma) - Email Me

other religious leaders are able to do things like that without bringing up religion. give a xian priest a chance and half the speech would be xian bible quotes. now before any xians call people hypocrites they need to remember one thing, unlike the Dalia lama, xians turn everything they touch into some brain washing scheme about their religion. I don't see the Dalia lama telling everyone to convert or suffer and i sure as hell have never heard of a Buddhist inquisition.

it did not seem to be a "religious" event. There was no mention of religion. It was merely a lecture being given by someone who is noted for being of a particular religion. That does not ring of being against Separation of Church and State to me.

The Dali Lama IS a religious figure, yet also a POLITICAL figure. The lecture he gave was supposedly devoid of any religious reference, so what's the issue?

Gandhi was a great man as well. If I remember, he was also a very religious man. Hindu, I believe? Mother Theresa was an exceptional woman and there was no doubt of what religion SHE followed.

If this same lecture were given by any of these figures, without mentioning any God or religious path, it would be just as educational. The message is the same, whether the deliverer is Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, or any other religion. They may follow different paths to divinity, but their philosophies were essentially the same...and completely separate from their religion.

Just because you disagree with someone's beliefs in religion doesn't mean you can't agree with their beliefs in other subjects i.e. politics, humanity, love, life. And it is possible to respect and admire someone and see that they are a good person even if you disagree with their religion. Lastly, while religion guides most people's beliefs in one way or another, it is not usually ALL that they are. Why should they be ignored just because you disagree with their choice of religion?

I have a 12 year old daughter, and would encourage her to listen to the words of anyone who lectured on this subject, regardless of what religion they followed.

Typical Of A Lot Of People Apr 15th. at 1:26:16 pm EDT

Mysteries Child (Garfield, Arkansas) - Email Me

Christians aren't the only ones who suddenly start howling "Separation of Church and State!!" only when it's someone else's Church in what they want to perceive as their State.

Being the majority, it may be scarier when they do it...

...but no matter what label you wear, the behavior is, in my eyes, equally wrong.

Next thing you know, they won't be able to go listen to anyone who professes at any time to be of any religion.

Whatta crock.

If the kiddies where going to see some religiouys leader like Pat Robertson or the like i bet he would have been all for it. typical of such people the only time they invoke church/state issues is when another faith is involved
