Winged Victory Statue Ready For Makeover, Color Change

Author: Adam Wilson Source: The Olympian (WA)

Title: WINGED VICTORY STATUE READY FOR MAKEOVER, COLOR CHANGE
Scaffolding circled the Capitol Campus' oldest and most prominent memorial Monday, and soon it will be wrapped in shrouds as it undergoes a $167,000 restoration, including a color change.
Winged Victory, showing World War I veterans marching under the protection of Nike, the goddess of victory, stands in the middle of the traffic circle near the Capitol.
The figures' brassy paint will be removed, the corrosion on the bronze underneath scrubbed off, and a new seal applied. The result should be dark-brown statues — not the shining gold of the past two decades.

...I confess, I like the gold. Maybe it's because I'm used to looking at Egyptian statues, and they were big on the bling. :) But once I read that it was not the original finish, I decided it would be nice to see it as the artist originally intended: bronze. The only disadvantage is that the copper in it might turn green, and gold doesn't tarnish.
I wish we had a random goddess statue around here!

I find it interesting and a bit gladdening that in the WW I era people actually saw nothing wrong with having a goddess representing an ideal placed atop a public building.
Fortunately those who might have objected couldn't reach her. Or perhaps they were wo busy looking down on others they couldn't look up and notice her.
I do think the refurnishing is partly because her shiny metal covering might attract the metal thieves we have nowadays who steal for scrap money.
How long is it going to be before the uptight ones decide to have a " war" on " idolatrous" statues, etc. in public buildings? Oops I forgot the curtain over the nekkid breasts at the White House incident.
Too bad we don't have a Pagan Molly Ivins for this.

Funny, a WWI memorial with the pagan goddess of Victory, Nike, overall. At least no vandals were out to deface it, as we had here in Lubbock some time ago when an artist place a couple of personifications of the wind, the Windy Man, on our new freeway. Some locals decided they were idols and destroyed them.
