Psychic’s Donation Not Accepted

Author: Jesse Froehling Source: Seattle Weekly (WA)

Title: PSYCHIC’S DONATION NOT ACCEPTED
Last year, when Alexandra Chauran sought to teach her students at the Kent Phoenix Academy about the benefits of composting, she turned to the King County Solid Waste Division for help. Chauran ended up using the agency's curriculum to help her students start a vegetable garden and donate the fruit—or in this case veggies—of their labors to a local food bank.
After that experience, Chauran says, she wanted to get involved with KCSWD's Waste Free Holiday program, which solicits small businesses to donate their services at a reduced rate to be distributed as gifts during the holidays, in the hope that grandmothers and other gift-givers will replace ugly sweaters with experiences that generate less trash. Chauran, who left the Kent School District after last year, sought to donate her skills as a tarot-card reader, a crystal-ball diviner, and a tea-leaf reader to the program. She was turned down.
"Thank you for your application," Megan Sety of the division's Recycling and Environmental Services department wrote to Chauran on Aug. 11. "However, we are not able to include offers of this type because of their controversial nature."

If you're looking for money, why discriminate to this degree? Have the psychic tone-down her business description as being a personal consultant.

Yes, I suppose it was controversial. In some things, truly, it is best to stay away, but if no one goes where they are not wanted all the time, soon there will be nowhere to go. While this particular venue might not really have been appropriate, there are those who would gladly chase Pagans from everything.

"I do birthdays and bridal showers."
Think about this. Someone who (theoretically) holds deep and profound information about you - things that, if you knew them, could change your life for the better. She (theoretically) can do and can know things that trained counselors, psychologists, and doctors only dream of.
....Yet she's doing pony tricks at parties.
I can see why they didn't want her. I'd not want to give people the impression that I think that these deep and profound revelations can be found from some entertainer at a party or bridal shower. Maybe the clown making balloon animals at the kiddie party can help me get in touch with my spirit guide, too.
Why does our community continue to support this kind of nonsense? It makes people think that pony tricks == Paganism, or any sort of actual magick. It makes me have to explain to people over and over, "that isn't what my religion or what I hold sacred is about."

We would like to politely inform you that you are not welcome here at all. This is so funny. Classic Seattle attitude. But really, why go where you're not wanted? Some people think it's outrageous not to fight the power, glass ceilings, institutional racism, etc. But as a realist and a pragmatist I still say, why go where you're not wanted?

This is something I'd expect to read about anywhere south of Mason-Dixon.

Refusing her because of the "controversial nature" sounds like something that would happen here in Texas, not in Washington State. While it has been some time, I have visited this beautiful land and found most people to be open-minded and accepting of other views and philosophies, so I am a bit floored.

I don't see the harm, as she was not going to charge anything but give her time. I am sorry they turned her down.

Bigotry and ignorance in suburban King County. Were I closer home, I'd make sure that those responsible for this nonsense were publicly embarrassed.
