Once In A Dark Moon

Author: Ian Wright Source: The Western Front (WA)

Title: ONCE IN A DARK MOON
Hecate, the Greek goddess of mystery, change and initiation, was honored Monday night at Western Associated Students club Pagans and Students Together’s first ritual of the fall.
Western’s Pagans, witches and druids from all different denominations of Paganism, came together at the rock sculpture on south campus, which they call Stonehenge. They attempted to call on the universe for help in changing themselves spiritually for the better and building good energy for the cycles ahead, said Western junior Jamie Stolz, president of WWU Pagans, a Facebook group for connecting all types of Pagans at Western.

I'm for reclaiming the word "witch". It's a fairly good word though often maligned. I am a Pagan witch (eclectic) , and while I am not Wiccan per se, I have studied the path and did like most of it. Witchcraft is magic in my book although there are some who embrace it as a religion and refer to their rituals as such. I don't dispute them because it is similar to comparing apples to pomegranates. Each chooses their own path and how they choose to walk it. I'm glad to see such a group and that they can meet. I hope we hear more positive things of them.

I was taught that Wicca was pronounced Witch-a and is where we get the term 'Witch" in our language from. Wicce was pronounced "Witch" and decribed a male practioner.
Wicca= Witch-a Wicce= Witch
It's the same souce folks. I think that our community should embrace that the word Witch was once a word decribing someone that was wise and knowledgeable. There will always be negative connotations because other religions will force that issue forever. If we constantly try to distance ourselves from the term though, we are disrespecting our ancestors who used the term and knew it's true meaning.
Blessings.

I would say that witchcraft is magic, but magic is not necessarily witchcraft...however the term magic as used by these wiccans is in fact witchcraft, given the origins of their religion.
The term Wicca originally meaning a type of initiatory Witchcraft.
But there are those who still attempt to distance themselves from the negative connotations the term witch still possesses, so i guess they are just trying to do that.

A lot of Wiccans embrace the term 'Witch' but not all of them do. Keep in mind that Wicca, while starting to become a bit more "organized" (by general term useage) these days, is still somewhat widespread. Wiccans' beliefs are still cast in a fairly large circle.
I'm not entirely Wiccan myself (Ecclectic Witch, here) , but I have eyeballed it pretty hard.
The fact that a group of students got the chance to do this is fantastic. I thought the article was nice even if seemed off here and there.

I'm proud of these students for coming together and celebrating, and maybe I'm a huge nit-picking jerk but some of the information in the article seemed a little off.
I'm not Wiccan, but I am a Witch. However, isn't the magic of Wicca also Witchcraft? Don't most Wiccans embrace the term "Witch" as well? Janet Farrar always has as has Scott Cunningham, Raymond Buckland, Doreen Valiente and other well reknowned Witches of our times.
Also, I thought that the attempt to compare the scientific method to how occult folk use magic like comparing apples and semis. Both are extremely important ways of understanding the universe, but very very different in many ways, at least in the way they were referenced.
Now don't throw potatoes at me. I'm just trying to get my facts straight here. As I said, it was a good read, and I couldn't help feeling good for these students. I just got a little confused.
