The Fall And Rise Of The Witch

Author: Susan Schell   Source: The Gateway (WA)

Title: THE FALL AND RISE OF THE WITCH

On Halloween night, ugly, rubbery masks will be pulled over little heads, faces will be painted green, broomsticks will come out of the closet, and silhouettes of black pointy hats will bob down the streets in the twilight. Witches are a prominent symbol of All Hallow’s Eve and are emulated in fun at costume parties and trick-or-treating each year.

But in 1692, in Salem, Mass., the drama that unfolded marks a dank, dark year in American history. Innocent people accused of practicing witchcraft were sent to the gallows for the “betterment of society.” During the infamous Salem Witch Trials, rationale took a back seat to hysteria and superstition as citizens were humiliated, tortured and murdered.

In Europe, witch hunts had been raging for years. In the 1600s, when the Puritan colonists settled in New England, they brought their fear of witches with them.

my point was that if the rampant Puritan religious fanaticism had not been allowed to influence the secular law, these accusers might have been prosecuted, as they rightfully should have been.
We all better be aware that the modern day Puritans, i.e., the fundys (aka Dominionists) , have been working towards a theocracy for at least the last 2 1/2 decades or more. They are the ones who lent a big hand to putting shrub in the White House for no other reason than that he's a fundy. Now they support McSame and Palin; not because they especially like McSame, but because Palin's a fundy. If that happens, I bet dollars to donuts they'll pray for McSame to die soon afterward, and then they'll have a neo-Puritan Dominionist fundy president who freely consorts with Witch-persecutors.
So, I'm supporting Obama!

the whole town got off the hook with the assertion that it was actually Satan who mislead them into those awful deeds. Basically the devil made them do it.: (
"In the Devils Snare" by Mary Elizabeth Norton, goes into detail using court records and transcripts. Scary isn't it the human capacity for excusing misdeeds by blaming it on "the other guy". BB Kat

I'd just like to add that later in her life the ringleader of the teenage girls who accused all these people finally admitted in her church (and her admission was recorded in the church records which still exist) that the girls just made up the whole thing. Due to the fact that Massachusetts was at the time run more or less as a theocracy, she wasn't prosecuted for the deaths of 20 people and walked out of the church a free woman!
I wonder how the people she caused to be murdered feel about her? I wouldn't want to have been in her shoes when she finally kicked the bucket!

Witch Costumes For Young Girls Oct 30th. at 9:38:29 am EDT

From the article: "On Halloween night, ugly, rubbery masks will be pulled over little heads, faces will be painted green, broomsticks will come out of the closet, and silhouettes of black pointy hats will bob down the streets in the twilight."

For girls 12 and under, "witch" remains one of the costumes of choice (Snopes.com places it second only to a princess ) . From what I've seen in the stores and online, however, has them mostly ditching the green paint. What I've been seeing is "elegant witches", "princess witches, "fairy witches", etc.- tons of black trimmed with lace and ribbons.

Whether you treat that as good news or bad news depends on how much you like ruffles and tulle.

I live not far from the Olympic Peninsula, where this article comes from, and had *no* idea all this was going on out there! And OMG, take a look at that online bookstore mentioned in the article! Wow!

The group sounds very interesting, and it was good to hear from some Pagans that are not strictly Wiccan.
It was a good article overall.
