Wash. School Was Within Rights To Bar Hymn At Graduation

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center Online staff

Title: WASH. SCHOOL WAS WITHIN RIGHTS TO BAR HYMN AT GRADUATION
A federal appeals court yesterday upheld a decision to bar the instrumental performance of a Christian hymn at a high school graduation.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals opened its opinion in Nurre v. Whitehead by noting, “Once again we enter the legal labyrinth of a student’s First Amendment right to free speech.”
The current case arose a year after a choral performance of the song "Up Above My Head" at the 2005 commencement for Henry M. Jackson High School in Everett, 25 miles north of Seattle. The song, with references to God, angels and heaven, drew complaints and protest letters to The Herald, the town's daily newspaper.

Did I mention her keen intelligence, wondrous mouth, perfect little breasts, radiant skin, and those generous hips that in the best Roman style exhibit a proclivity for just a little too much cake in this life? This exquisite ocean of passions and gentle decadence that is Miss Bartiromo? Oh, Maria. Ave, ave, ave. My god, I think she's even a conservative Republican, but I forgive: she will be my symbol for tolerance and understanding, as well as fertility, and wealth. But if we are to gauge the glory of women just by the soulfulness and depths of their eyes, then how can we neglect the majesty of the late Olivia de Havilland, or the stunning deliciousness of Bette Davis in her prime (RE: The Letter, Jezebel, Now Voyager, etc.) . Are the eyes windows to the soul? I really don't know. I do know that THEIR eyes consume MY soul at will in its entirety at the very thought of a life, an afternoon, the exchange of love and time with them. With the most casual glance, a hint of kindness, they set my head on fire and cause a riot where it counts. Women like that can drive a man bananas. You will just have to excuse my violent enthusiasm! A cold drink, please . . .

I'm a hawk about separation of church and state, and not using gov't to push a particular religion, but this is too much.
It was an instrumental version of the piece (which is not a hymn, BTW) . Is the melody and harmony implicitly Christian? Absurd.
I may have a personal bias towards this piece, as I sang a solo part in during last years winter soltice. In a Catholic Church, no less, singing to the Goddess. But that's another story.

"Those eyes, heaven help me . . ." I have had occassion to make the same comment to several very beautiful ladies. No matter how hot their bodies are the eyes for me are the clincher. I spoke with one the other day that had such arresting eyes i almost forgot about the rest of her.

Now that's fair and balanced. But what a beautiful song! Praise them for their excellent taste in music, if nothing else. In the hands of a competent tenor or soprano, it melts the heart quicker than the wicked witch, pants down in a rainstorm. Of course I don't worship the Virgin Mary (now there's a stretch--well, better ask for forgiveness) . I suggest she be substituted at will. Just put your favorite woman on the pedestal. Hopefully no one will tell my partner that it's Maria Bartiromo. Lord, she sends me over the moon. Those eyes, heaven help me . . .
