Letter: Debate Shifts Focus Off Jesus’ Teachings

Author: James P. Nelson Source: New Richmond News (WI)

Title: LETTER: DEBATE SHIFTS FOCUS OFF JESUS’ TEACHINGS
To the Editor:
If Jesus came back today, would He call it a Christmas, Holiday or Yule tree or maybe a Tannenbaum or a Hanukkah bush?
Jesus wouldn’t call it a “Christmas tree,” since they didn’t arrive on the scene until around 700 A.D.
As the story goes, an English monk named Boniface was trying to convert oak-tree-worshipping Druids to Christianity. To make a point, he cut down a big oak tree. After the tree fell, the only tree left was a small pine tree and Boniface dubbed it “the tree of the Christ Child.” Obviously impressed, the northern European pagans started converting to Christianity.
Twelve hundred years later, the descendants of those pagans-turned-Christian Druids would turn into Nazis and kill 6 million Jews in the name of the Christ child. Since 1,900 years had passed since the Jews talked the Romans into crucifying Jesus, maybe those Germans forgot that the Christ child was a Jew. Since descendants of Druids were stoking the ovens of the Holocaust, Jesus might avoid calling it a “Tannenbaum.”

Mysteries Child (Garfield, Arkansas) - Email Me

Well, folks, here we are...
...folks screaming that everything He supposedly taught is a lie, a conspiracy, a complete and utter falsehood...
...folks who claim to follow Him making everything He supposedly taught look like a complete and utter falsehood...
...folks, in general, still fighting over who's right and who [God] is going to smite royally.
Love thy neighbor as thyself?? Only if the neighbors wear the same clothes, have the same skin, cast the same vote (where we happen to have the privilege) , and worship in the same religious organization.
With all that behavior, who needs [God] to do the smiting?? We seem to be managing quite well on our own.
If He-- or any other godform-- dropped in among us in human form today, He/She/It would take one look at all the stupid squabbling and weep.
Or reach for the lightening, posthaste.

Christmas trees (as opposed to other trees included in worship ceremonies) are South German traditions, not British. Supposedly Boniface attempted to explain the concept of trinity by their triangular shape, with little success. They weren't even all that popular until the mid-1800s: German customs brought them to America, and they first became popular in England when Queen Victoria did a photo shoot of one in Windsor Castle. They were mostly used for decorating city buildings before that--guild halls, churches, etc. Sure enough, in the 17th century when people started putting them in their houses, one old fart named Johann Dannerstuart started the time-honored tradition of complaining that Jeebus was the Reason for the Season.

I couldn't even want to open the article itself especially since he posted the lie that the Nazis were Pagan when it was a proven fact that they were devout christianists. What I find even more amazing is the fact that some Pagans actually believe the lie that the Nazis were members of Thule Gesellschaft.

put the article didn't make ONE lick of sense. If the author was trying to make a point, he failed miserably. And I don't think the Druids would be impressed by one tiny pine tree....

Because there is virtually no historical record of Jesus at all, except for the breathless acccounts found in the Gospels--which were written some 40 years or more after his death. Any historian knows that all secondhand accounts are suspect. You go to the primary evidence, and for Jesus, none exists. So how can we confirm what he really said, how he really lived? What the world has been hearing is what others want them to hear. But it's not like the message was new, anyways. The Greeks were consumed with ethics and proper citizenship hundreds of years before the purported birth of Jesus. Don't get me wrong--I have no hard feelings against Jesus if he did exist. The Romans were rough customers and executed many people, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But as for the wealth of teachings, who said what, and when? Christians simply did not invent the golden rule! Nor are they any good at living by it, if Jesus could only see them now. It is just so silly, so misguided to worry over what a shadow of a legend cloaked in an enigma had to say!. But anyway, please enjoy this lovely winter solstice.

If this article made a lick of sense, it could be concluded that if Boniface hadn't destroyed the religion of those he was trying to convert, the Holocaust wouldn't have happened.
This is nothing but a Christmas basket full of propaganda.

No matter how much propaganda we are fed - the jews were not the only people in those camps. There were catholics, protestants, disabled people, small businessmen of all persuasions (if they wanted your business they put you in a camp) gypseys (all of them were exterminated in germany by what I've heard) - all kinds of people. The jews want the christian crosses removed from the graves at the camps because it distracts from the fact that jews were killed there.
Jesus, who hasn't come the first time, would not recognize any of his supposed followers because the teachings he brought out are just not followed by many.

Lady Arrian (Cincinnati, Ohio) - Email Me

with the last several paragraphs of his opinion,
” If Jesus came back today, would we even notice Him? Perhaps…
Suppose He told us to “Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Would Sean Hannity call Jesus a “communist” for His anti-free market talk? Would the Reverend Pat Robertson urge the CIA to assassinate Jesus for his socialist rhetoric?
What if Jesus, with His Middle Eastern complexion and accent, appeared on Main Street and told us “in the world you will have trouble but take courage for I have conquered the world.”
Would we alert the government about a possible terrorist? Would He be arrested, flown to Guantanamo Bay and water boarded to get Him to talk under water?
What would Jesus do, if He came back to see millions of people dying from disease, starvation and wars, while millions turn their backs to worship “American Idol.” Would the Man born in a barn wonder if it really was worth dying on Calvary?
I think, if Jesus came back today, He would call it a “pine tree” and weep inconsolably."
I honestly think, if Jesus came back today, he would be horrified by the state of the world and the environment and the way some have twisted his teachings to suit their own agendas.

"Forgetting" that jesus was also a Jew was and is really merely a matter of political convenience- not actual forgetting. In fact, some pictures even show him as blond haired and blue eyed, rather than Mediterrainian looking. The Jews may have demanded the Romans do something about him, but they didn't really kill him. he was killed by official Roman Justice after they complained of his disrupting their activities. (being a public nuisance in some cases could be fatal. depends on the circumstances. After all, he was hung out between two thieves, since he was a Jew.) As for St. Paul, their complaints earned him a one way trip to Rome to be beheaded when it was revealed to Consul Porcius Festus that he was a bonifide Roman Citizen. As for the official policy of the Nazis, they were involved in carving out a new state religion with the Fuhrer at the Helm, using the Teutonic myths as a sometimes basis while creating new ones to serve their own purpose of proving a supposed superiority over everyone else, and they destroyed or damaged churches in conquered lands, removing atrifacts of worth wherever they went. I think he would have called it a "christmas tree"- since he would be adopting the terminology of any place to which he traveled if he had left his own lands any distance.

save one point. The Nazis didn't kill Jews in the name of the Christ Child. They, if anything, were anti-religion, save Himmler who thought himself the leader of a wanna-be masonic cult. The only deity that shown in the eyes of the Nazis was their Furor, Adolph Hitler.
Perhaps they used the Christ Child as an excuse to kill, but that is simply superficial propoganda to appeal to those of the German Christian population.
But I digress, this was a really well rounded and reasonable letter to the editor. Cudos to the person who wrote it.
