Court Date Set For Suit Over Nativity Scene

Author: The Associated Press Source: WIBA News 1310 (WI)

Title: COURT DATE SET FOR SUIT OVER NATIVITY SCENE
The Christmas scene on Green Bay's City Hall came down in December. Next month a court will consider whether it should have gone up at all.
The federal court in Green Bay will hear arguments next month to determine whether city officials overstepped their authority by installing a nativity scene atop the public building last year.
Court officials on Wednesday scheduled opening arguments to begin Sept. 15.

Winds of AuSable (Gwinn, Michigan) - Email Me

and even though I moved away over 20 years ago I still consider it "home" since my immediate family still lives there and I'm a mere 3 hour drive away. Anyway, when this issue first hit the news, my older sister and I discussed it quite a bit. We both agreed that if the government allows one religion to put up a display, then all religions should be given the same privilege. However, to avoid one religion given preferential treatment over any other or the possibility of a display being vandalized due to ignorance and disrespect (as happened in this case with the Wiccan wreath) , any holiday decorations should be “generic” in nature. Even when I was a practicing Catholic, I never believed religion and government mixed, especially since this country is a huge melting pot of diverse cultures and faiths.

String up the lights and trees, set up something generic, but leave the creches, and the menorahs, crosses and even the Pentacle on private properties. I'm not saying the Town square shouldn't look festive, but I would prefer all religions be where they should be. It may not prevent the setups from being trashed anyway, but prosecution might be easier since they would be on private property and not on public land.

the more I start to think that it would be in better taste if no religious decor was put on government property. A government is supposed to be here for us all so, should they not decorate in a manner that can possibly be accepted by the majority? Let's string some lights (which is a reference to religious ideas but few seem to notice this fact) and call it done. I used to say if one group was gonna be represented, let us all be. However, as was the case here, there are persons out there who simply will not allow this. Either way, someone's feelings are gonna get hurt. Tough nookies because that's life. Besides, I would want my government to worry moreso about how they will fund the expansion of a highway in my area before they worry about being sued over some plastic decorations.

I don't see a problem with Christians erecting their symbols on public property but then, we Wiccans should be allowed to as well. It's a bunch of crap that the Wiccan wreath got vandalized and torn down but the Nativity scene stayed up. Anyways, that's my two, three cents...
