Religious Schools Can Hire, Fire Teachers According To Their Missions

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center

Title: RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS CAN HIRE, FIRE TEACHERS ACCORDING TO THEIR MISSIONS
Many religious school teachers are not protected by Wisconsin laws aimed at stopping discrimination in the workplace, the state Supreme Court ruled yesterday.
In a 4-3 decision, the court said in Coulee Catholic Schools v. Labor and Industry Review Commission that religious schools have a constitutional right to hire and fire employees to carry out their missions, and that includes many teachers.
Justice Michael Gableman said all employees whose positions are closely linked to the religious mission of their employers cannot make claims like age, gender and racial discrimination under the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act. In the past, courts had generally only exempted religious leaders like ordained clergy and ministers from such laws.

Discriminate on your own damn dime. Run the school as you see fit ONLY so long as you completely 100% fund it yourself.

I can understand a parochial school not wanting to hire a Pagan, or something. But to hire and fire people based on age and gender really should be illegal for ALL schools, public and private. Your ability to teach children does not depend on your age, or on what's in your pants. It depends on teaching ability, care for the students, and knowledge of the subject matter.
The people who teach at private schools generally feel called to teach as a profession. They obviously are in it for the kids, not the money--private schools pay even less than public schools. Firing someone who is that driven to teach children in a religious setting is about as low as you can get.

My father used to be a Hebrew school teacher at a Conservative synagogue and was fired when they discovered that my stepmother is a Christian, and not a Jew. In fact, several other teachers were fired at the same school for being in interfaith relationships as well. However, as a private religious institution, they are permitted to do this, and my dad knew he was risking his job when hired by lying about his wife's actual faith. Is this wrong? Absolutely! But, I also don't see this as changing anytime soon.

This decision is that Teachers are associated with a religious school's mission, which should be a no brainer. Minister means to Attend, and attending to the getting of Wisdom is one of the best, that a member of a circle can contribute, and is certainly more important to the mere Hypocrite of Celebration.
The discenting opinion, is that this will threaten the School Voucher Program, that tries to seperate Religion, which happens to include all education, from public funding.
Why was a senior teacher made an example, that longetivity is no guarantee of continuity? That's going to make the other teachers nervous, and raise the cost of Quality, pretty much trashing this school's future.
At 53, this teacher might have been able to find a job, until she was 55, but is now mostly on the parish welfare, and no money has been saved. The subsequent "Correction" of our monetary supply, will be crimping donations, so her dismissal disses dis dismal missal.

shouldn't get public funding. Period. End of story. They should be funding by the parish (whatever) to which they belong.

Mrs. Harris is wrong. Discrimination is very much a part of Catholicism. If one is Gay or anything different from church teachings then there is always discrimination. However, religious schools have always had the right to pick and choose according to their teachings amongst the students, so it's expected amongst the teachers. As long as they do not accept any public funding then they can keep to their rules.

this will interfere with the ability of these schools to get any public funding - and it should.
