A Bad Decision In Bridgeport

Author: Charleston Daily Mail Opinion Source: Charleston Daily Mail (WV)

Title: A BAD DECISION IN BRIDGEPORT
For 30 years now, Bridgeport High School has given a place of honor to Warner Sallman's "Head of Christ." The painting now hangs on the wall outside the principal's office.
Though the majority of people in Harrison County are probably Christians, they do not have the right to promote their beliefs using the resources of a public high school, where students who may be of other faiths are a captive audience.
Christians must do their proselytizing on their own time and in their own spaces -- and should be proud to do so. School officials have acted ignorantly and ungraciously instead.

here we go: "This is one of the founding principles of the nation. It protects all people, including Christians. Early American Christians were the ones who insisted on writing this protection into the Constitution"
now i just commented somewhere else about his... most were Diest not xians.. they are the ones who insisted... sheese.... misinformation prevails even when their heart and mind are in the right place.
Because if they spend the money there the kids will look up other religons on the internet God fobid they find another path they are more suited to.....they might learn to think for themselves and read other opinons whom might disagree with what xains think... they might realize science rules over religion 9 times out of 10.... and that science is more important than Bible study.

since this current group of religious nutcases came to power, I get the distinct feeling that the world is headed for a really really bad situation.
These people simply will not stop until they have their dominion and then the end of the world to bring back their God. I'm beginning to know how the guy who wrote Revelations must have felt.

will $150 grand buy?
How many computers for the computer lab? How many books for the library? How many microscopes, bunsen burners and test tubes for the science classes?
How far could that $150,000.00 go in the arts department? For paints, brushes, canvases? Digital cameras for the school paper and yearbook staff to use? How could the drama department spend that kind of money for copies of scripts and usage rights, scenery design/construction? How could it possibly be important to the band for new sheet music or to the choir for piano tuning?
Indeed, how could each teacher use just a small portion of that amount to improve her/his classroom and the learning experience for the students?
But no, we must focus on the "truly important " things, like fighting to keep a painting of an obvious religious figure representing one particular religion hanging on the wall outside the principal's office. Now there's some skewed priorities. Screw what the kids need, that d@mn painting is more important. Argh!

Actually, the Fundies aren't missing any point. They know precisely what the situation is. They are only claiming not to in order to claim victim's rights. After all, the object for them is to turn public school into another prayer meeting house. By doing so they will also control the cirriculum and sundry other things. They do not want a separation of church and state. They want to be able to control every aspect of life in and out of anywhere they happen to be.

These religions have enough money pouring in from their followers to run every single religious group that they want, so why force all of this down the throats of all others?

Anytime someone rants about kids not being allowed to pray in school and how it's ruining society I always ask them "When did Christian parents become so lazy that they can't wake up on Sunday to take their kids to Church or wake up half an hour earlier before school to pray with their kids before they put them on the bus?"
This is a common misunderstanding by most Americans and used by the RR to bash the godless Liberals. Children ARE allowed to pray in school, as well as, read their Bible or other sacred text. Nobody said they couldn't, what is no longer allowed is school sponsored prayer. Prayers, usually directed to the Christian interpreation of God, used to be broadcast over the load speaker every morning and every kid was expected to bow their head in prayer and give the requisite "Amen". This is what the M.M. O'Hair case put a stop to, but if a kid wants to say a silent prayer at the start of his day or at a meal, s/he can do it. What they can't do is ask the entire table to pray with them; if they want to read their Bible on free-time, let 'um knock themselves out; but they can't insist other children read with them. Likewise, no religious activity on the part of a student can interfer with the activities of the classroom or other students.

Very good article. It comes close to making the same argument I always make about displaying of religious articles with the line about how Christians should be proud to display their symbols in their churches.
Anytime someone rants about kids not being allowed to pray in school and how it's ruining society I always ask them "When did Christian parents become so lazy that they can't wake up on Sunday to take their kids to Church or wake up half an hour earlier before school to pray with their kids before they put them on the bus?"
It's also fun to ask the politically conservative Christians "Why have such trust in the school system teaching religion when as conservatives they don't even trust the federal government to properly teach basics like arithmetic or reading ?"
Once you've eliminated the most common excuses they use for shoving their religion on the schools, then it's very easy to get to the truth that the real purpose for putting religion in schools is to convert the children of non-christians. If they aren't already too far gone that they've become Dominionists they might recognize that that's why it's unconstitutional.

I hope the taxpayers in this county are paying attention to the fact that this school district is WASTING $150,000 on a picture of Jesus when that money could be spent on students.
