Contentious Painting Of Jesus Stolen

Author: WCHS-TV   Source: WCHS-TV (WV)

Title: CONTENTIOUS PAINTING OF JESUS STOLEN

So much for 'Thou shalt not steal.'

A contentious painting of Jesus Christ that hung in Bridgeport High School is missing today.

Superintendent Carl Friebel says it was taken early this morning, only two days after the Harrison County school board decided to fight two civil liberties groups in court to keep it hanging.

The intruder was caught on three security cameras breaking into the school. The person obscured his or her face.

Let us not be guilty of the same fearful and ignorant disregard, of the faiths of others, that we so frequently experience.

Pictures of Jesus, or whatever religious figure, along with all the other icons of this or that faith are not the problem here, nor are those individuals who earnestly revere those images and icons as a part of living their faith. The problem lies with the noisy minority that insists on trying to get their religion, and it's trappings, forced into the lives of everyone else.

When we do insensitive things, like hoping for the damage or destruction of a religious icon, we do nothing but foment hatred and suspicion. The picture of Jesus needed to leave the government operated school and go to a place where it belonged and would be appreciated. It does not need to be stolen, defaced, or destroyed.

but the whole "whoever it was they were bad because they stole and I learned in kindergarten that stealing is wrong" argument would be out of its depth in a damp patch. The world is not black and white. Stealing is illegal: it has no moral polarity. I suppose stealing food or money for food to feed your children also makes you an equally bad person. Grow Up.

"It was against the law and we should never break laws." That argument falls rather flat too. Breaking laws makes people pay attention to you. Behaving badly gets your cause noticed. How many societal landslides were caused by well-behaved citizens?

"How would you feel if they did it to your revered religious icon?" My revered religious icon is not displayed on taxpayer-funded premeses. Let's pray it never is. However, let's play a little game called THEY ALREADY EFFING DO THIS TO WHAT THEY THINK IS OUR CHERISHED RELIGIOUS ICONS. Every time a classical work of art or art based on classical concepts where the classic happens to originate from a Pagan society is repressed by jack-booted cross-jammers who really need some relaxing sex, that is the same exact thing. The sauce that is good for the goose is just as savory on the gander. If they don't like it done to them, maybe they should loosen their sphincters on us for a change.

"Help, help! I'm part of the Xian theocracy which has gripped the entire Western world for the past 1500 years and now that I'm not allowed to rule the planet, it's oppression! It's persecution! I'm so distressed! Woe is me!"

It wasn't Sunday School that the painting was stolen from. It is Sunday School where the painting belongs.

I hope they find it with a dartboard drawn on it. I hope they find that someone captioned it with "get a haircut, hippie!"

Most importantly, I hope they find it and it's in unservicable condition.

Miracles do happen, and the stupid picture could have just dissapeared.

It could happen. . .

Or the conspiracy nut in me says that they (the School, or the Xtians, or both) took it down to cause a major fuss, afterall, I believe that an empty frame is a more spiratual depiction of the deity of the viewer's choice.

Missing The Point Aug 18th. at 11:07:17 am EDT

Lynx (Kilgore, Texas) - Email Me

The point isn't whether or not the painting should be kept up or removed. The point is someone broke into the school and stole something of value to BHS and its community. Stealing is wrong no matter what religion you follow. Just because we don't value it doesn't make it any less valuable to those people.
A value placed on an object be that positive or negetive is subjective. We won't want them cheer and over the thief of anything of value to us be that a painting or a computer.

Could not resist, it is an inside joke that some may get.

On a serous note, it could be a prank, it could be some misguided effort to save it, it could be almost anything at this point. It should be interesting to see how this one plays out.

It is also nice to see that blame was not layed where it is not due.

Bright Blessings,

I needed another Haysoos picture for my collection. I'm gluing velvet to all of them and glow-in-the-dark highlights. Next to the George Dubya's and the Pat Robertson's, I think this one will look great.

Now What Do We Do? Aug 17th. at 10:30:45 pm EDT

Greenman (Columbus, Indiana) - Email Me

With $150,000 already raised, the school administrators can not only get a nicer replacement of the blue-eyed Arian Jesus of Salmon-- one where the eyes follow you down the hall. And with all that money, they can also build a monument of the 10 commandments at every door! And then put a cross like Soledad's on the top of the school so everyone for miles around will know that this school stands up for Jesus! And, finally, fly in the American protector of Christianity, Pres. G.W. Bush, to dedicate the whole thing.

Seriously, though, I think the most credible motive for stealing "Jesus" here is to save the school money. Why better reason would someone have than this? If it were the work of "godless" vandals, then it surely would have been grafititied rather than carefully stolen out of its frame.

After all, wasn't it the disciples who stole Jesus' body in the first place so they could claim he was risen?

This story is not over, not by a long shot.

Greenman

It should have been done in an official manner, but I guess this solves the debate over that particular portrait. Maybe we'll be seeing it on Ebay someday.

Maybe somebody took it to keep it from being taken down by the courts? Maybe I'm thinking about this too much.

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

The article was missing, but from what little I could read I will say this. I don't know why the picture was taken down or whether it was removed either for protection or destruction. All I know is that it was removed, not by the courts- as it should be- but by an individual.
Either one who was tired of all the controversy- or one who wanted to create controversy by claiming its disappearance on those trying to "ban religion" from the schools yet again. In either case it serves no one if one chooses to take the law into his-or her own hands.

One Person? Aug 17th. at 8:50:44 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

As to whether one person can make a difference, The painting stolen was of one such person. Let's replace it with a painting of Zaragoza, as another who made a difference, or Bolivar, or the Three Fox Brothers, Guy, George and Swampy...

One man, one car, can make a TV Series, but one man, alone, can make or break the Future.

Another guy who made a difference, invented the frequently cleaned amusement park, as a vehicle for his Mousifications.

The Thief, in this case, made a big difference, in the cost of legal defense. Perhaps the Principal would like to cover the cost of that window. Even the annonymous person who knew where the Security Cameras were, made a difference.

Anyways, Montessorri recommends an icon of Innana Suckling Horus.

I was not able to read the story because the link took me to JonBenet instead of the proper article.
Yet, I get the gist.
Although I do not like stealing, I have to suport the theif. The school was going to waste a bundle of money on a stupid Jesus picture worth maybe $20.
Maybe others are right and a parent really wanted a good education for their kid instead of a crapy Jesus picture.

Not A Crime, But Legal Duty As Citizen? Aug 17th. at 6:18:20 pm EDT

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

It's quite easy to see most Americans as having not just a legal right, but legal duty, to "defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic". Most men and many women are defined in Federal law as part of our military, even if never enlisted as such (10 USC 311) , while most military and many government agents have a sworn duty to defend against corrupt government as caused this painting to be where it was. In that light, it might not be a crime at all, to act to defend the country and higher standards in its laws, from illegal actions by local school officials.

OTOH, this could have been a far more serious crime than petty theft. It's possible some local bible thumpers merely moved the painting, giving the appearance of theft, to gain publicity and help in fundraising for an indefensible effort to violate rights of neighbors. The intent of such an effort is a series of serious felonies, even if documentation and prosecution as such are unlikely.

If the true intent was to defend against the rights violations by this painting's wrongful placement, it would be foolish to not burn it. Burning would eliminate risks of persecution for acting to uphold higher levels of law now, to reduce the oppressive effects when "justice delayed is justice denied", regardless of the ultimate outcome in court. It would prevent the possibility the painting would become a false god to xtians who don't really honor their own bibles, and treated like a heroic martyr by some.

It's also possible someone concerned about education took this icon of oppression away. If the pending litigation can be rendered moot, that would save the school system the costs and fees payable to Plaintiff counsel, even if their own costs are subsidized by predatory locals with no respect for law or Constitutional principles. It would be fitting to give the students in that project F's in any classes where they studied US history or related fields, as whatever they might have done for classwork, they clearly don't "get it". But, if the theft, if it was a theft, was to redirect assets to education, how will local officials treat that?

These are the makings of school shooting incidents, when adults responsible for educating kids in the needs of diverse society, instigate religious bigotry and hate for all but their own perceived kind, and encourage rather than restrict abuses of fellow students. Perhaps unlikely, but a school administrator, teacher, or school board member, or parent, might have removed this painting hoping to divert a political mess which was stratifying with signs of promoting that severity of conflict.

Regardless of whether it's any or none of these possibilities, there is one thing this painting has proven itself to be. It's now an ideal representation of a "banned gang symbol", were schools to be honest in such policies, and use neutral criteria based on instigation of hatred and conflicts for other than legal purposes in designating such symbols as outside protected speech rights.

Strange, how bible thumpers claiming to worship such graven images of Jeezzus F'in Piss Christ, can subvert what they claim to value into despicable hate cult tokens.
