Wellsburg 'Witch Trial' Stirs Debate

Author: Warren Scott   Source: Wheeling Intelligencer (WV)

Title: WELLSBURG 'WITCH TRIAL' STIRS DEBATE

A Wellsburg man wants to hold a Halloween event centered around an alleged witch trial in Brooke County in 1802, saying it would be one way to draw visitors to the county.

But the Brooke County Commission heard Monday from two local historians who object to the event, saying there’s no evidence the trial occurred.

Though the commission hasn’t prohibited the event from being held, its organizer, Michael Traubert of Wellsburg, said he plans to move it from the county courthouse to the Brooke County Public Library.

Traubert, who has spoken on local history to various civic groups, said he believes a Brooke County woman named Annie Blair was tried for witchcraft but acquitted.

There really isn't much to see in Wellsburg, they have a nice library. I live 15minutes up the river from this town and as a Witch, I think it would be different if they did this. Because we have a lot of hard-core Christians in our communities around here it's hard to do anything that involves the word "Witch." So what if it never happened, this would be an opportunity to teach the community about how awful it would have been to be accused of witchcraft back then. Maybe if others could understand what that was like, they wouldn't be so judgemental. I say go for it Wellsburg! I'll come and take a peek.

Blessed Be
