Practicing Pagans Praise And Promote Religious Passion

Author: Samir Abdel-Aziz Source: The Parthenon (WV)

Title: PRACTICING PAGANS PRAISE AND PROMOTE RELIGIOUS PASSION
The Marshall University Pagan Association, a Neo-Pagan organization on campus, is focusing on educating students about its religion as well as providing a place for Pagans to worship.
"Neo-Paganism includes everything, including Wicca," said Marty Laubach, faculty advisor to the MUPA. "Some Pagans follow different traditions. Some follow Norse traditions or Egyptian traditions, while some follow the Western Messianic traditions. Paganism is an umbrella, it's a place where they all connect to one another."

we need more of this kind of positive media. So often when the media goes to report on Pagans and associated events, they inevitably go for the sensational angle to grab mor readers. The public needs to understand that we as pagans are just regular people too. Maybe we like to be a bit unconventional, but that's simply a part of who we are. Deep down, we're all human. It's great that this is happening on a college campus, where I've found that college folk are more accepting of different points of view. It's a good place to start, and I'd like to see it spread out to the community at large. I've harped about the idea many times before here and I know some may find my comments tiresome, but I can't help feeling that this message needs to be promoted. Everyone has the right to disagree and not follow our beliefs, but when our beliefs are being deliberately slandered and outright lies being spread, we need to set the record straight for everyone. Good for those students; I wish them all the best in their efforts.

it's good to see a POSITIVE article about the Pagan Path! Maybe these young people can finally dispel the foolish myths about us. It's still ad to see that they have to put up with fundie foolishness and intolerance. Maybe this is the first ray of the Aquarian age dawning.... one can only hope!
Love to all

Was I the only one that notices that the two students they interviewed were both from Ohio? I guess Athens really *has* got a large Pagan population.
Nice to see two positive articles about Paganism in one day! A nice counter to the ones posted recently, but who really pays much attention to the Catholic Digests of the world? ;)

more articles like this. The more of these that come to light, the more knowledge is passed around. There will always be those who heckle and badger Pagans because we aren't like them, and don't want to be. But at least, it can be countered with the truth if Pagans keep plugging at it in their own quiet way.

I'm glad to see this article. It's difficult to put all Pagan religions into a whittled down version that non-Pagans can understand, and I'm impressed at their effort. I work at the University of Southern Miss (I'm the token Pagan, lol) and I tried to find/help set up a Pagan group here. I found out in my early searching that there had been an attempt at it, but it had been abandoned because they couldn't get the support from the staff (this was before I started working) and there weren't enough students who were willing to out themselves on campus because of the way the faculty/staff reacted when they tried to find an adviser for the group.
So they moved the group off campus and still meet on a bi-weekly basis. It's more of a gathering place than an outreach like this program.
I applaud your efforts and will send my hope to you. Blessings!

I don't fully agree with how they were defining Paganism, but I like their attitude.
The Pagans club on my own campus also experienced some discrimination. Nothing to major as, for some reason, the Pagan population on campus was rather large so we were a force to be reckoned with.
But we did have our fliers torn down on occassion, which was more annoying than anything else 'cause someone would have to go around to put them back up.
The biggest issue we had was one time around Halloween some Christian managed to get an article published in the school newspaper equating Paganism with Satanism. But again, since the number of Pagans on campus was so large that most people dismissed it as fundie paranoia 'cause they were either Pagan themselves or had friends that were Pagans.
On amusing situation happened during a studen council meeting. Each club had to send a representative. Ours was a small, cute, petite girl who dressed rather conservatively. The Campus Crusade rep unknowingly sat next to her and was flirting with her before the meeting. (Yeah, they are SO big on abstience *snicker*) . Anyway there was a club roll-call and when our rep mentioned that she was there for the Paganis club, the CC guy became blatantly uncomfortable.
