Marshall Pagans Invoke Spirits To Bring About A New Year

Author: Samir Abdel-Aziz Source: The Parthenon (WV)

Title: MARSHALL PAGANS INVOKE SPIRITS TO BRING ABOUT A NEW YEAR
The Marshall University Pagan Association, a Neo-Pagan organization, performed the ritual of Ostara, the virgin goddess of spring, on Buskirk Field Thursday evening.
"It's a time of renewal and rebirth, a lot has happened to me this past year its good to cleanse yourself," said Casey Shreve, senior photography major from New Creek, W.Va. "It is a time to get together with open minded people. People you can relate to."
Not everyone was pleased with the ritual, however.

The ritual is merely the focus for intent. It has always been the manifestation for a desire. Those who claim it wasn't done "right"- or said they would have done it differently certainly have opportunity to try at their convenience. After all, they could have created their own. One has to wonder how the very first witch did things and whether or not she had critics who could have done things differently-- if they only had the gumption to do so, rather than criticize. I hope they had great success with it.

It takes a certain amount of courage to hold a Pagan ceremony in public. And it does not help that there is *always* someone around acting Witchier-Than-Thou saying, "Well it wasn't a REAL Pagan ceremony" or "They didn't do it the way *I* would have done it so of course it's no good", etc. These people deserve our SUPPORT! Look past the persnickity details and see what they're trying to do. Otherwise, some Pagans might hesitate to hold any type of public ceremony if they perceive they'll be shot down by their fellow Pagan nitpickers, and we don't want that. The worry over heckling Christians (that happily didn't appear this time) should be more than enough.

The history major seems to have a personal bone to pick with the Pagans on campus.
"Mockery"? Ok, they are a Neo-Pagan organization which means, while influenced by ancient practices, they aren't trying to recreate it. Likewise the ritual sounded more like something ment to strengthen the community. With all the different beliefs out there, it's no wonder they would take a more eclectic bent.
And let's be honest people, these kids are probably all new to Paganism. Can anyone here say they "got it right" (hate that phrase) the first time?
As for the "anti-Christian" thing. Well, yeah, we have our share of haters and all of us are guilty of at least making jokes at Christian's expense, but anti-Christian is a little strong. It's just shy of calling all the Pagans bigots.
The guy's comments sounded very bias and, as I said, like he's got a personal vendetta aganist a particular Pagan or something like that. It's too bad they included him in the article 'cause otherwise it wasn't that bad.

... If the ritual actually took place as described I'm afraid I wouldn't have been very happy with it, either. The organizers seem not to understand how a ritual actually works. The phases must happen in the right order though you can do anything you want within those requirements.
However, given the other errors in the writing of the article, it's quite possible that the journalist who wrote it got that mixed up, too.
All that said, though, I think the person who called the ritual a 'mockery' does not understand the different intention behind community *celebratory* ritual and intimate *invocatory* ritual. The purpose of community rituals is to create community, and this one evidently did that just fine.

I have no idea what he is talking about 'a mockery', everyone I met there was wonderful and full of love for everyone. There were actually several Christians within the circle, waiting in case someone attempted a protest to give another point of view. Everyone just seemed very happy and full of love for everyone else. Somehow I doubt he was actually there to see the ritual, or the fellowship of the participants...
