Four Hedgesville Students Sent Home For Wearing Eyeliner

Author: Megan Healey   Source: WHAG (MD)

Title: FOUR HEDGESVILLE STUDENTS SENT HOME FOR WEARING EYELINER

Four Hedgesville (W.V.) High School students were sent home Thursday for allegedly violating the dress code. It's something that's not sitting well with their parents, who've called on district administrators to investigate.

Derek Rose says he likes to wear make-up; in fact, he wore eyeliner to school nearly every day last year.

"Lines beside my eyes, red on top and black on the bottom or all red or whatever,” he says.

But when school started this week, Derek was immediately told his eyeliner was out of line.

Too Sexy Sep 1st. at 11:35:22 pm EDT

TerrahDawn (Greenwood, Mississippi) - Email Me

Personally I feel that eyeliner on the masculine is as 'sexy' and 'mysterious' as it is on the feminine.

Eyes are the gateway to the soul.... and to add a line around the eyes to 'bring them out' or highlight/emphasize - is a reminder of the deeper inside of human --- our higher selves, true selves or ultimate truth or soul.

Christian thought is to stamp out anything they deem "feminine in a man" and "demonic". The Pharaohs wore the eyeliner.... even after the Ancient Greeks rule Egypt.... here comes the Christians to stamp out the 'demonic' ways of the Ancient Egyptians... so the eyeliner had to go too.... but they seemed to like the eyeliner on the feminine... so it's fine for women to wear eyeliner/makeup but not men. Since this time, makeup/eyeliner is not only considered feminine but also a reminder of the Ancient Egyptians.

There are Christians that I have known that believe it's fine for a woman to wear a bit of foundation, blush, eyeshadow and mascara BUT NO eyeliner or lipstick! Again, the [Royal] Ancient Egyptians wore eyeliner and the females even wore lipstick.

One of the ancient methods to make eyeliner was ashes mixed with a mildly sticky residue or sometimes water.

Lipstick was made with crushed berries - anything that 'stains the skin' for awhile.

Bottom line --- there is nothing wrong with the masculine wearing eyeliner.

Being From West Virginia........ Sep 1st. at 4:13:37 pm EDT

wvpagan (Big Bend, West Virginia) - Email Me

Being from West Virginia, I hate to see stuff like this. We never hear anything good about this place, only the stupid and ignorant.

I emailed the following to the principal. Hopefully he actually read it.

Sir,

I know you have probably gotten thousands of emails, letters and calls concerning the young men that were sent home for wearing make-up. And I realize that you probably won't bother to read this one, but as a citizen of West Virginia, I feel that I must voice my concern.

Equating eye liner with Satanism, and then equating Satanism with Witchcraft is not only insulting to Pagans like myself, but it shows the entire Nation that West Virginia can't seem to even produce an intelligent High School Principal.

Now, I know you must be an educated man, being in the position of Principal, but please, for the sake of the other citizens of West Virginia, do a little research. There are many Pagan, Wiccans, and Witches in this State. But most of us don't allow the general public to know what we believe. Chances are good that you know a few Pagans yourself, I know a few in your area. It's a good bet that you have at least causal contact with someone that is a Pagan, be it a Wiccan or just a flat out Witch.

The majority of Pagans, including Witches, either don't believe in Satan, or else they are what is called "Christian Witches", who do believe just as any other Christian. Regardless of what those people believe, they are no different from you or any of the other people that work/attend your school. Statistically Pagans have a lower crime rate than other "religions" and are persecuted more than other religions, so please don't associate us with Criminals, we aren't.

As for the young men that wore/wear the eye-liner, I personally would throw a fit if my teen aged son wore eye liner to school, but that is only because I live in fear of people like yourself because of my personal beliefs and don't want that type of attention. But I would fight to the death to defend any young man's right to wear eye liner if he so desires. That's one of the things that makes this county great, the fact that we have choices like that. And one of the things that makes me ashamed of this State is folks like you who want everyone to conform to your idea of what we should be.

Respectfully,

I am a traveler. I love to travel, and that’s what I do – I have been to different places in the world, I have seen many people, listened to different opinions.
People have different ways of dressing up, different lifestyles, and of-course different preferences when it comes to adorning their own selves. I think it’s high time that the world should start accepting people as they are, with their respective choices. Make-up and dressing up is extremely personal thing for people, I don’t think anyone should be denied any rights just because they want themselves to look in a particular way. I will not associate this to Satanism. Besides, people can Not wear such make-up and still indulge into evil practices.

This Will Probably End Up Deleted, But... Aug 31st. at 4:10:54 pm EDT

When it comes to real life, do people expect anyone to listen to what they have to say, if they display absolutely no regard for the values and mores of society? Do they think anyone's going to take them seriously, if they're swarping around looking like something out of a low budget B movie?

When people go around constantly 'flipping the bird' to mainstream society, why are they so shocked when mainstream society returns the favor?

Carrying on like this... how do some people think that makes us look? Like a bunch of misfit toys who need to be shipped off to the proverbial island for everyone's sake, that's what. It certainly doesn't cast us as intelligent, functional people with something even semi-valid to say.

Then again, I chose to be solitary for a reason, and this only serves to remind me why. :P

No Sympathy, Really. Aug 31st. at 3:33:12 pm EDT

Elistra (Lexington, Kentucky) - Email Me

Sorry, but I really don't have any sympathy for these students. If you deliberately go out of your way to be freaky, outre, and discomfiting to those around you, what else do you expect? You asked for negative attention, you got it, and now you complain about it? Puh-leeze.

In some ways, they serve a purpose... they are so obvious and obnoxious about their deviance that occultists like me can usually pass completely under the radar.

If makeup is satanic, then Mary Kay *must* be Satan...and let's not talk about those Avon reps...*shudder*
I've lived in WV, actually not far from Hedgesville... and ya know? This doesn't really surprise me. That's why we don't live there, anymore.

Another Thing... Aug 30th. at 3:34:50 pm EDT

Corax (Glendale, Arizona) - Email Me

what in the heck does wearing eyeliner have to do with Satanism? Such a parallel exists ONLY in the fevered, brain-dead minds of your typical, way over-the-top fundy preachers. So what if some goth-esque kids want to be a little different?
It seems to me that school administrators want to create a generation of brainwashed, conforming lemmings, who robotically do whatever they are told to do, by the government, by the school, by the preacher, by ANYBODY AT ALL who is enough of an actor, that he can SEEM to possess some kind of authority. I live for the day when absolute conformity is NOT seen as a virtue.

of tired, old-as-dirt Victorians! (Even if they aren't chronologically elderly) , the thinking of people like these school administrators is so f**king old and ossified that they are incapable of change. The only comfort is that statistically speaking, they will die long before the students they are mistreating, and then those students will have the last laugh!
When, O Gods, will we be freed from these living corpses?

You couldn't make this up!

Boys wearing make up is a sign of satanic worship, criminal gangs and witches?

This principal has hit the happy weed way too hard.

I am literally laughing my head off at the absolute ridiculous of this school.

Someone give this principal an award for ignorance and stupidity.

If they ban make up for boys then they should ban it for girls as well but I don't think that would go down too well with the fashionistas.

That conflicts like this happen all the time in our schools and they use their power to make the young submit to their ideals. Instead of stoping hatred and voilance against individuals they are inticing it.

When I was in school I was constantly bullied and sometimes even hurt by other students. The schools solution to it was to tell me to stand up for myself, yet when I did I was the one put in detention for "dissruptive behavior". That was 10 years ago, and things have not changed.

The school authorities wonder why teen depression and sucide is up these past years, well the answer is right infront of them in the mirror.

I don't know when these things will change, but they need to do so soon or we will lose our chance at helping the next geniration learn, grow and become better than ourselves.

E-mail To Principal... Aug 30th. at 10:38:51 am EDT

EWT (Harrah, Oklahoma) - Email Me

"Sir,

As a high school principal I believe it is safe to assume you are an educated man. I would also assume that with your higher level schooling, you received an education in government to include the Constitution of the United States. Taking this into account, I must say that I was set back by your following statement in regards to a few students attending your school:

"In a statement to NBC25, Hedgesville principal Don Dellinger said school policy states certain markings can symbolize satanic worship, witchcraft or gang membership. He says the make-up worn in this case reflects those kinds of markings, and is inappropriate."

It is my pleasure to inform you that Satanism, and Witchcraft are federally recognized religions and are afforded the same protections under the law, and Constitution, as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc. Furthermore, Satanism and Witchcraft are in no way affiliated with "gang" related activity. As a Technical Sargent in the United States Air Force, and proud Pagan/Wiccan/Witch, I am astounded and offended by your statement. It goes against everything I have sworn, under oath, to protect and defend against enemies foreign and DOMESTIC.

I'm not saying that these few youths are Satanist or Witches; they are probably just wearing the eye-liner as a goth statement of individuality, but I would suggest you parse your words better in the future when it comes to denigrating other religions."

If they don't like it, it should be listed in the rules. That way, they can point to the rules and say "That's why you need to wash it off." That way there would be no arguing, no flinging words like Satanism and Witchcraft back and forth. Just have a rule about no makeup and leave it at that. As a high-schooler myself, I could deal with that.

Psychologically Speaking... Aug 30th. at 10:31:10 am EDT

Sapphire Firebloom (Williamson, West Virginia) - Email Me

Psychosocial Stage 5 - Identity vs. Confusion

* During adolescence, children are exploring their independence and developing a sense of self.

* Those who receive proper encouragement and reinforcement through personal exploration will emerge from this stage with a strong sense of self and a feeling of independence and control. Those who remain unsure of their beliefs and desires will insecure and confused about themselves and the future.

That is from Erik Erikson's Theory of Development. This part takes place beginning at age 12 - and that's what these kids are doing. They are searching for ways to express their individuality and identity. I myself would still be coloring my hair funky colors, and wearing darker makeup (which I still do when going out) . Unfortunately, employers don't like that kind of thing for the same reason - distraction (and I think it's a crappy reason for doing this) . My child is easily distracted. I give him a few minutes to get the distraction, whatever it is, out of his system, then bring his focus back to me.

These "adults" need to stop saying that this stuff is indicative of "gang membership" and especially need to stop categorizing it as "witchcraft" because there are so many lawsuits that could be brought to bear on them. If I were the parents of those kids, I would go straight to a lawyer and state that my child is subject of slander or defamation of character for being labeled a potential "gang member" just for his/her outward appearance.

Here in WV, it's pretty common to be in the broom closet. I'm out to my mother, not my father. I don't tell employers because it's not their concern. I'm out to my fiance, who supports me, and I'm raising my son in my faith. When he gets older, if he wishes to wear his pentacle, I'll fight for his right to do so - distracting or not. If he wants to wear makeup, I will fight for his right to do so. Sexism has no place in the school.

Dress codes have only one purpose in my mind: to make kids conform and teach that conformity is a good thing. I think George Carlin said it best when he talked about conformity of school uniforms: "Don't these schools do enough damage makin' all these children THINK alike? Now they're gonna get 'em to LOOK alike, too? And it's not even a new idea; I first saw it in old newsreels from the 1930s, but it was hard to understand, because the narration was in German. But the uniforms looked beautiful. And the children! The children did everything they were told and they NEVER questioned authority. Gee, I wonder why anyone would want to put our children in uniforms."

Girls can wear eyeliner to school, but guys can't?
What a bunch of crap.

Either everybody can wear makeup to school if they want, or it should be against the dress code for all.

Why isn't American education focused on truly important issues, instead of wasting time on such foolishness as whether or not boys are wearing eyeliner?

How Things Do Not Change Over Time Aug 30th. at 9:54:20 am EDT

Back in the 1960s, when the Beatles were popular and everyone, especially the boys, wanted to be just ike them, I would cut articles out of the newspaper about kids, especially boys, being punished for letting their hair get "too long", whatever that means. One boy was arrested and handcuffed for wearing a Beatles haircut. It's just a pixie bob cut, in case anyone wonders. The principal of that high school, and I don't remember where it was, had a buzz cut. That was the 1960s.
Now it's piercings, weird haircuts, Goth dress and makeup, pink or green hair -- that's all surface stuff, all teens do silly things. I know I did. :) It's part of being a teenager. They grow out of it. We all did, didn't we? This school principal shoudl be focusing on bad things like school bullying, not on what kids wear.
Fear is an enormous factor in something like this -- fear of loss of control, fear of the unknown, fear of anyone who is an individual. My goddess, it's the 1960s all over again!!!!!
