Environmentalists Challenge Endangered Species Act Reforms

Author: Fox News   Source: Fox News

Title: ENVIRONMENTALISTS CHALLENGE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT REFORMS

Conservationists are challenging U.S. Sen. Craig Thomas' proposed revisions to the Endangered Species Act.

Thomas, R-Wyo., wants to make it more difficult to petition for a species to be protected under the federal law. He introduced his "Endangered Species Listing and Delisting Process Reform Act of 2003" last week.

Thomas' proposal would establish minimum requirements for a listing petition, including an analysis of the status of the species, its range, population trends and threats. It requires that each listing be supported by sound science and seeks to make it easier to delist a listed species.

Sound Science Feb 18th. at 9:01:30 am EST

by DolphinSmile (Austin, TX) - wc_xemail

Whether to consider a species endangered ALREADY IS grounded in "sound science". I'm an ecology major, so I'm learning how these things work. I believe it goes like this (although I am doing this from memory, so feel free to correct me if my numbers are off) .

A species is considered CRITICALLY ENDANGERED if it has a 90% or more chance of going extinct within the next 10 years.

A species is considered ENDANGERED if it has a 50% or more chance of going extinct within the next 10 years.

A species is considered THREATENED if it has a 50% or more chance of becoming endangered within the next 10 years.

These percentages are determined by biologists studying these species to see how bad their threats are. It varies from species to species on how many individuals the species needs to stay healthy, what kind of threats from humans the creatures can endure, etc. Lots of sciencey stuff going on there!

Plus, another thing bugs me. "Under Thomas' proposal, the secretary of Interior also would determine if sufficient biological information exists to support a recovery program."

What does THAT mean? Sounds to me he's saying that if we don't know a whole lot of about a species and are not sure if it is endangered, we should just assume it's OK. I think we should do just the opposite. If we don't know about a species, it should be protected, until we find out it's really doing fine. So many species have gone extinct without us even knowing them, or maybe only being known from one sighting.

I guess it just depends on your values. To me, every species is unique, like a work of art, that has taken millions of years to create. Once they are gone they will never exist again. What right do we have to go around destroying them? But then again, a lot of people think that making money by logging or oil drilling is more important.

we can get Sen. Craig Thomas to start going extinct; then he can have trouble getting himself put on his new endangered list.

"Thomas' proposal would give a more substantial role to the states and general public in determining which species are endangered."

What in the name of the Goddess's green Earth does the general public know about it? Oh just imagine the possibilities. This is just one more Republican attempt to destroy everything that isn't concrete and asphault.

ATTENTION ALL PAGANS FOR A LATE MESSAGE! Feb 18th. at 6:15:39 am EST

by WiccanWarrior (Southern CA, USA) - wc_xemail

My eternal appologies to the staff of Witchvox for I am blatantly violating rule number 2 to posting on unrelated topics and I hope for eventual forgiveness, I also understand these messages are likely to be taken down in less than a day's time.
Pagan Community this is vital, there are some of you who missed reading the India Tracy story which was posted a few days ago in the Wren's Nest News as Number 6318 I believe. Those who missed it, I implore you to read it, I believe that this can be a rally point for our community of an immense scale. I implore all who are appaled, disgusted, and outraged by this event to spread it to whomever it may be spread to! If anyone knows (or is a journalist) I suggest that this be pushed to make a headline. Even students should attempt to have this travesty brought to the attention of their school news papers and have it printed. This news merrits far more headlines than a single headline on "Knoxnews."
Furthermore this should also be a rally point for both young pagans and the parents of young Pagans to rise to action if such attrocities are presently occuring and have not yet been legally addressed. Thus I implore all who see these messages to 1. read India's story 6318 (by checking what was on "This Week" of Wren's Nest News) 2. Attempt to spread this news to as many as possible in as official a manner as possible 3. And to address the present abuses towards Pagans young and old in a legal and mature manner.

Blessed Be
Anonymous Wiccan Warrior (Hopefully doing the right thing)
