Phelps: City Must Allow Anti-Gay Monument In Park

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center

Title: MINISTER: CITY MUST ALLOW ANTI-GAY MONUMENT IN PARK
A Kansas minister is intent on erecting a monument denouncing a gay University of Wyoming student beaten to death, and he’s citing two Utah cases to do it.
To mark the fifth anniversary of the killing, the Rev. Fred Phelps wants to put up a monument in a Casper, Wyo., park that says: “Matthew Shepard entered Hell October 12, 1998, at age 21 in defiance of God’s solemn warning: Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is abomination. Leviticus 18:22.”
He bases his contention on two decisions by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, saying that if municipalities allow one group to put up a monument in a public place, they must give equal treatment to other organizations.

| The Good Reverend Should Talk To His God For Once | Oct 19th. at 7:26:36 pm EDT |

by Rhymer (Ann Arbor, MI) - wc_xemail

Perhaps "Rev" Phelps should remember that his Lord and Savior has more say over the disposition of Matthew's soul than some malignant loudmouth from Kansas. Whilst I won't be a witness for a faith I don't hold, I had to read the same book he allegedly does, and nothing says a mere human preacher is in the business of damning people or teaching hatred.
As I recall the salvation part was determined at a higher level than that of the good reverend, who has no business whatsoever telling Jehovah who he can save and damn.
He might want to look after his own soul instead, and expiate the demons or repressed emotional difficulties that seem to be troubling him instead.
To paraphrase Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer, I wouldn't want to go to a heaven which had the likes of Reverend Phelps in it.

| Atrocity | Oct 19th. at 8:56:20 am EDT |

I was living in Ft. Collins, CO at the time of Matthew Shepherd's murder, and many of my friends knew him as a young and vibrant soul. His murder is an atrocity.
I would think that Phelps is CONDONING such vicious hate crimes by erecting what his mind must see as a commemorative monument. Someone hasn't been reading their Ten Commandments. In my opinion, that is as terrible as smashing a young man's skull. But if for whatever reason he does not get his wish with the monument, the story has been all over the news--just what he wanted, the publicity.
Peace and light, Andromeda

| A Hotbed Of Controversy | Oct 19th. at 6:43:31 am EDT |

by Chanting Gnat (Cheyenne, WY) - wc_xemail

Casper, Wyoming has become a hotbed of controversy recently. Just a few weeks ago, I saw on the news that the presence of a ten commandments monument, in a city park, was being contested. This is going on all over the country, I know. But what made me really angry, was that in the meeting, one of the elected council members stated, "We cannot let these immoral people [who want the monument removed] influence the good people of Casper." The implication is obvious! Of course, these were the comments televised! Now this, about Matthew Shephard! The murder of Matthew is still sharply felt. We abhor Phelps, we try to ignore Phelps, but he just keeps returning.

Ok kids, I know taht we want to respect the rights of all people but this is ludicrous. I can't imagine this monument would ever get placed on public land but if he does go through with placing it on private land, join me in picking up a hammer and reducing it to gravel. We have suffered this individual's insanity for too long.

At one time I tried to get togther some folks to go with me to have get-together at one of the parks in Topeka to show Philips that there is people out there that don't like his lies. The more I tried the more I was told that it was not a good Ideal because that he will show up with his Famliy to picket us.. I wanted that because I was going have Picketthon jto raise money for a Gay cause. But it seems that All the other was scared to go because they was afraid of trouble with his Family of Lawyers.
If you dont have the gut to fight against those who tells lies to further there cause, you don't have the rights to say later that we should of stop them before it went to far. The time to stop them is now, before he get to the point where people start to belive in those lies. I am still williing but I cant do this alone, We need to stop lies now. Remember Hitler started as a Nut that got folks to belive him. BearWolf

It is stories like this that just make me nauseous and sick. People that think this way about any topic scare me with their lack of compassion and intelligence. WHat this victims family must be feeling...how can he represent himself as a man of the cloth?

| I Don't See A Christian... | Oct 19th. at 2:40:25 am EDT |

by Raven Fire (Paragould, AR) - wc_xemail - Web

He's not a Christian. He's nothing but a dispicable man intent on breeding loss of freedom and discontent in our society. Our government is so intent on attacking terrorists outside the U.S., but people inside the country just like this guy can terrorize other americans and nothing is done. Hell, he's a hero if he accomplishes it, and a form of martyr if not. Disguting doesn't even begin to describe what this man is. I'd wager that people like him would prefer to see civil war than let us live our lives in peace as we choose to live them. He might as well be committing treason.
With Brightest Blessings, Raven

| Has Phelps Ever READ His Bible? | Oct 19th. at 1:49:42 am EDT |

by Sophie (Rolla, Missouri) - wc_xemail

Just another example of a narrow-minded Christian using and abusing the Bible selectively support his own abusurd point of view. It always amazes me how Christians can quote one verse and ignore the fact that 1, 000 verses say just the opposite. I wonder, is Phelps familiar with the verse that says, "Thou shalt not kill?" I don't recall an addendum saying "except gay people." What about Christ saying that LOVE was the key to everything? He didn't say "love just between men and women, " did he? If the courts let Phelps put up this horrific monument, then America is surely doomed. Any court system that interprets "freedom of speech" as "freedom to promote hate-crimes in public" might as well make the swastika its new national emblem. May the Goddess give us strength to stand against this.

Fred Phelps is that type of person (however inhuman he seems) that inevitably reminds those around him to truly understand the gravity of life and love through his blatant disregard for it. Although I am one of many that would like nothing more than to see his tortured soul put to rest and/or healed (so that he might soon return that favor to the World) , I truly appreciate the emotions he enforces. The rage and pain, and even compassion and pity are powerful reminders that I am a being not just of the mind, but of the heart. It is then that I know there is hope, for I also see others like myself coming to the same conclusion and making the conscious effort to be the anti-image of Reverend Phelps. That is a good thing for the World.
I had not heard of Phelps until 2001, when a beloved, 19-year-old gay activist from my high school took his own life and the reverend sent his minions to picket across from the campus. But I learned quickly, to my utter horror, that men like that existed and preyed on the despair of others. It was then that I also found out his role in the tragedy that was Matthew Shepherd. I cannot forget the importance of that year, in which that horribly pathetic man taught me what it meant to have a soul. I have Fred Phelps to thank for that, even though I wish I didn't.

This is just one of those times that makes me wish that I could be where I wanted to be whenever I wanted to be. I'd like to beat that pathetic excuse of a human, let alone one who's supposed to be compassionate, who's supposed to 'honor thy neighbor', who's supposed to show what us humans should do, like a religious leader, especiialy one of Christianity, where they specifically outline every thing like this...Oh well. Show's just where he's gonna go in the end...

| Has This Rev. Flipped His Bible Upside Down?!!!! | Oct 18th. at 11:05:29 pm EDT |

by LeQuita (Davenport, Iowa) - wc_xemail

I almost can't belive he has the nerve to call himself a man of God. Oh, and the fools who follow him and support this endevor of his are just as short a few cards in their decks as he is. My mom is a very devout christian woman (I however am studing Wicca) . I was raised never to Judge another person for who or what they were or wore or looked like. Cause the Bible says so, or at least that is what I was taught. Better yet that's what the bible on the shelf in my closet says. The best I can hope for is his God will judge him in the end, as well as those that agree with that this is a right or righteous thing to do. I can only hope that the family of this Sheppard fellow can find strength in thier Diety of choice and their friends and loved ones to pull them through this horrendous time. May the god and Godess be with them .
