Wyoming City Moves Ten Commandments

Author: Matthew Van Dusen Source: The Casper Star Tribune (WY)

Title: CITY MOVES TEN COMMANDMENTS
Casper’s troubled tablet, shrouded in a protective green cover, took briefly to the air Friday before settling on the trailer that removed it from public view. For now, at least.
A work crew hauled away from City Park the Ten Commandments monument, donated by the Eagles Club, that has been part of a national controversy about the constitutional separation between church and state.
The Casper City Council voted in October to temporarily remove the monument and later include it in a historic monument plaza at Beech and Second streets.

I'm so relieved to hear that felps isn't going to get to put up that monument. I was just in the Laramie project and myself and the rest of the cast could not bear the thought of that monument going up. A few thousand people signed a petition against it and I'm sure everyone will be glad to hear this. Thank you for posting this. It will make a lot of people feel better. The discrimination and hate in America need stop. Thank you again for posting this.

if only because now, when I go back to Casper for my parents' fiftieth anniversary (oh, fear! oh, dysfunction!) I won't have to bribe my nephews and their rowdy friends to remove the thing themselves (which they'd gladly do for me, provided I put up the bail money) .
Seriously, though, people have asked where the protesters were, and I think I know.
Most Casperites, even the more conservative ones like my folks, were pretty disgusted by the behavior of the Phelpsians who invaded Casper at the time of Matthew's death. I think that, as much as they'd like to see a Ten Commandments monument in City Park, they'd like even more NOT to see Phelps' "monument" there.

| The Potential Problem With This Won't Be Phelps | Nov 18th. at 7:41:42 pm EST |

Well, you're right, this is probably just postponing conflict, but that conflict won't be with Phelps. That public building is for historical documents. So no matter what, Phelps won't be able to get his monument in there. The potential problem will be regular Church/State issues. However, knowing Wyoming, I doubt the whole controversy over declaring the 10 commandments a historical document will be coming up any time soon.

The key sentence in this article was "The Casper City Council voted in October to temporarily remove the monument and later include it in a historic monument plaza at Beech and Second streets." If the "historic monument plaza" in question is also on public property, then placing the 10 commandments monument (or any other religious icon) there will merely start the process up all over again. Phelps will be able to use the same arguments to force the city to comply with his request. Why they didn't give the stupid thing back to the Eagles (as they requested) I'll never understand. In trying to have their cake and eat it too they will end up with it crammed down their throats.

I feel that religious objects have no place in a public park, court, ect. And I'm glad to see that it's been removed.
If this monument and others like it with religious conentations were given to churchs or private religious groups I think that would be very appropiate.

I'm really glad to hear about this. The reason there aren't more protestors is because of the homophobic goings on here in Wyoming. Because of the one reverend christians especially wyoming christians look really bad. And for the record Not all of us here in Wyoming are homophobic. My best friend is gay and so are majority of them. Here in sheridan there is a arge homosexual population and things just wouldn't be the same without them.

| Normally, There Would Be Protests | Nov 18th. at 3:47:11 pm EST |

by Christin (Laramie, WY) - wc_xemail

I pretty sure that under normal circumstances, if this monument were to be removed due to the usual Church/State Separation reasons, there would be a huge outcry. However, since the whole reason that even came up was because of Fred Phelps and his disgusting hate monument, and this was the best way to get rid of him people are letting it slide. After the murder of Matthew Shepard, Wyoming was raked through the mud. All over, the residents were being portrayed as backwards hicks and that really did not sit well with people (especially those here in Laramie) . Even the ones who are incredibly homophobic usually scaled back on the nastiness because of the negative public opinion of the rest of the country. So if sacrificing the ten commandments monument is a way to get out of more negative homophobic-related attention, then people are happy to do it.
Besides, it's not like the monument isn't going to be on public display anymore.

It appears that their monument is being moved to perhaps a more appropriate place. Especially if it resolves objections. And also especially if their monument is going to a place which gives Fred Phelps less of a pretext to put up a hate monument.
Where are the protesters? The ones in Alabama have less of an issue here. And the ones following Phelps don't have much to say.

Hold on! Where are the protestors screaming at the people moving the monument, telling them, "keep your hands off my God!"? Where are all the bible-thumping zealots to sermonize about how the nation is "going to Hell" for removing a monument? Never mind, I remember now...they're all still in Montgomery, whining about how Moore has been "martyred for the faith".

| Suprised | Nov 18th. at 10:26:21 am EST |

I have been following this issue since I first learned of it. The one thing that amazes me (considering Casper is mostly Christain) , is that there has not been a public uproar about it. Yes, there are letters to the editor in the papers, people have been vocal in the debate, but there has been no PROTESTING. There are not people on the corner screaming that we are all going to burn for removing it. I think the counsil was wise in their descision to remove it (even though they had to be threatened with a lawsuit) . I am just very amazed it has not turned ugly here. I still think things are very backwards here, but the people of this town suprise me sometimes. They really do.
