Yule See Christmas In A Different Light

Author: Brendan Burke Source: The Casper Star-Tribune (WY)

Title: YULE SEE CHRISTMAS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT
Ever wonder how the whole tradition of decorating evergreen trees around Christmas got started? Or have you ever thought about who started the tradition of hanging mistletoe this time of the year? Or have you ever mulled over how the whole Santa Claus thing got started?
These and other holiday traditions did not get their start, as some may suspect, with people who celebrated the birth of Jesus of Nazareth every Dec. 25. In fact, these traditions were being practiced well before Jesus was born by the people of Europe, who honored the winter solstice with the celebration known as Yule.
Decorating evergreen trees during Yuletide began as a way to honor Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree, said Casper resident and Yule celebrant Steve Ford.

The great thing about mythology is its pliability. All myths share one simple fact... they all had a beginning.
Doesn't matter what sparks your fire as long as it keeps you warm.

I like this article. Believe it or not out here in wyoming not a whole lot of people know about wicca or let alone understand it. To the comment about the holly king. I've heard the story of santa being based on many different gods. The Norse god Thor has been depicted being flown around the sky on a sleigh like thing being drawn by horned goats. who knows though? I'm glad a paper out here in Wyoming decided to recognize Yule.

It seems as though every holiday in the Christian religion is celebrated based on pagan traditions, and considering that wicca has been around for so much longer than Christianity it makes you think that the Christian relgion is nothing but a wanna-be fake! I have nothing against them but I think they check out the baackround and then see if they still belive.

Another great article. I am really starting to like this turn in reporting. Keep sending in these wonderful pieces, I'm tired of all the negative stuff. Shagger.
