Tribes Gather To Help Heal Earth

Author: Angus Thuermer   Source: Jackson Hole News & Guide

Title: TRIBES GATHER TO HELP HEAL EARTH

A Shoshone spiritual leader and advisor will lead a 24 hour drumming ceremony north of Jackson starting at sunrise Saturday in an effort to heal environmental harm.

Bennie LeBeau, an Eastern Shoshone from Ft. Washakie, welcomed visitors "of all colors, all cultures," to the ceremony. The gathering will be north of the Triangle X Ranch on the Bridger Teton National Forest on North Topping road. The site also is known as the Shoshone Sundance Grounds.

Similar gatherings are being promoted at 19 other sites - mainly mountains, rivers and significant bodies of water - forming a 600-mile radius medicine wheel with the Teton Range as the hub. LeBeau said a vision calls for the simultaneous ceremonies, including ones at places like Lake Louise, Mounts Rainier, Whitney, Shasta, Lake Tahoe, and sites on the Platte, Arkansas, Colorado, James and Saskatchewan rivers, among other places.

"The ancestral spirits have spoken giving direction to build and reset into harmony a huge medicine wheel," LeBeau says on his Web site teton-rainbows.com.

Platte Gathering May 11th. at 11:45:13 am EDT

by Starscryer (Denver, CO) - wc_xemail

My DW and I attended the gathering on the Platte last Saturday. It was a small group, but the day was very enjoyable. We drummed, prayed, and took part in a traditional Chanunpa ceremony - certainly an eye-opener for many there. Many thanks to White Eagle for organizing the gathering, and Ms. Rodriguez for sharing the Chanunpa.

Mr. LeBeau's vision was sincere, and many have answered his call to pray for Grandmother Earth. Yes, there were many "new-age neopagans" in attendance, including myself - I follow both the paths of Wicca and the Red Road. These folks are sincere seekers, and answered Mr. LeBeau's call with humility and good will. This is not an aberration, but fulfillment of the Lakota prophecy that people of all colors and all nations will come to pray at the tree of life with the indigenous peoples in the "seventh generation." That time is now.

It is unfortunate that the indigenous people of the many tribes inhabiting Turtle Island cannot agree with each other, and support the spiritual efforts of some that benefit all. This is nothing new; we should all pray that these wounds within the indigenous community are healed for the benefit of all.

Mr. LeBeau's Medicine Wheel Ceremony has been in the making for many years now, and there was wide distribution of these plans on internet sites devoted to Native American spirituality. To claim that one was uninformed, is to claim that one cannot see the trees for the forest. Indeed, Medicine Wheel events were planned and publicized worldwide.

Native Of Washington Unhappy. May 11th. at 11:02:25 am EDT

by Mother Moon (USA) - wc_xemail

This has the natives here in washington very unhappy. From what I have been able to gather this person did not ask any of the washington tribes elders permission and they are saying that the group putting it on is distorting the medicine wheel into a new age thing.

I Remember A Native American Saying May 11th. at 10:04:13 am EDT

by eli (wendell nc) - wc_xemail

We do not inherit this earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

also a native american proficy

Only after the last tree has been cut down,
Only after the last river has been poisoned,
Only after the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.

And Yes Again! May 11th. at 7:56:32 am EDT

by Drumming Willem (France) - wc_xemail

I couldn't agree more.
Can't join in physical form though, for reasons of being on another continent.
We need to heal the wounds of the earth, made by human deeds and unthoughtfullness.
Let's drum, dance, pray, make food and warmth.
And one day we're going to make a planetary medicine wheel.

Blessings to everyone,
Willem

Yes! Yes! Yes! May 10th. at 7:19:52 pm EDT

Let us dance, pray, make sacred and divine love, prepare meals, plant food and flowers, and kneel naked upon the blessed Earth to thank the Spirits who have given their nod to this heartfelt prayer.
