Preachers Are Discovering That MP3 Players Make Bully Pulpits

Author: Kathleen Murphy, Religion News Service Source: Salt Lake Tribune (UT)

Title: PREACHERS ARE DISCOVERING THAT MP3 PLAYERS MAKE BULLY PULPITS
The radio preacher is finding new life in cyberspace.
Godcasting is the latest advancement in online religion, in which preachers convert their sermons to audio to be heard on portable digital audio devices.
Using iPods or any portable MP3 player, "podcasting" lets people download audio programs that can be listened to whenever they like. It's a form of audio syndication that musicians, businessmen, tech talk show hosts and political commentators such as Al Franken have already adopted.
Religious podcasters said they like the medium because it's an inexpensive way to reach the masses.
Nick Ciske, media coordinator for Minneapolis Vineyard Church, also called Bluer church, said, "It takes a lot of money to run a TV show, it takes millions of dollars, and it seems a lot of the focus is on money. Podcasting is basically free. There is never a mention of asking for money. There's no need."
Meanwhile, the Pagan Power Hour started providing spells, cooking and crafts in January. The show is aimed at educating people about Wicca, said Malcom Waterstone, host of the show produced in Quincy, Ill. A recurring topic has been the need for public worship spaces in small communities, but the show also advises listeners that the correct practice of Wicca excludes sacrificing animals and worshipping Satan, Waterstone said.

I'm glad these folks have found this technology. Hopefully, economic choices will cause them to abandon the airwaves, and we won't be subjected to this "stuff" any longer.
This morning I was treated to a religious songfest on PBS, and it was so blatantly evangelical that I almost lost my breakfast. I'd give MP3 players myself to these folks to get rid of that dreck.

Not that long ago, someone made the remark that Freedom of the Press exists for those who own a press. Now, thanks to new technology, almost everyone has a chance to get their message heard.
What I would *really* love to do, if I had the money to acquire the facilities and the talent to do the job right, would be to start up a cable channel for alternative spiritual paths. In the meantime, this might be something I can afford to do within the confines of the discretionary income provided by my day job.
To build on a saying I heard when I was in the Air Force, we'll just have to run some of these up some flagpoles and see which ones get saluted.

The down side is that a lot more people will be blasted with the Fundies and all of that in their sprint effort to make gains. The up side is that it levels the playing field so that everyone has a chance to find those who will listen to those of different faiths. To be able to be more selective really doesn't stack the cards much in anyone's favor, as it reaches the self same audience that is already on the internet and blogging on line anyway. As more Pagans and others get their messages across, what gains Christians now could eventually be pared down anyway as only the hardcore will stay with it, while the major audience will move on to other things the ipods offer in the long run. All we have to do is hang tough.

It is not only for the "fundies", which I use for the people that take the Bible literally, it is for everyone, already there is a hour set aside for Pagans, maybe more of us need to check this out, COG for example???
It gives everyone the oportunity to spread the word of their beliefs or to correct misconceptions of their beliefs as well!
