Illinois: Gov Digs In As Foes Attack Pharmacy Rule

Author: Abdon M. Pallasch And Dave Mckinney Source: Chicago Sun Times (IL)

Title: GOV DIGS IN AS FOES ATTACK PHARMACY RULE
Both sides are preparing for what may turn into a legal battle over Gov. Blagojevich's order that pharmacists dispense contraceptives, even those that some pharmacists say kill embryos.
The Illinois Pharmacists Association asked Blagojevich to rescind his order. State Rep. Ron Stephens, a Downstate pharmacist, said, "I will not abide by it." The conservative Family PAC is urging pharmacists to ignore the order. And Catholic Bishop Thomas Paprocki implored Blagojevich from the pulpit to rescind the order.
The governor is standing firm.
On Monday, he warned Family PAC Director Paul Caprio the state would impose "significant penalties" on any pharmacy that ignores the order.

Like it or not, in this country, the FDA decides what drugs are safe, effective and - legal - to dispense by licensed and accredited pharmacists. That’s the law. And, it is not arbitrary.
If the pharmacist doesn't like doing the work they have been entrusted to do, and choose to fill prescriptions on a personal and arbitrary basis, then they should do like the rest of us. Get active and vote for those who would have the law changed. Due process.
If that doesn't work for them, then they should get out of the profession and leave room for those who can do the job. Seems they are more interested in lobbying anyway.

that is what will come if pharmacies start refusing to dispense certain drugs. The black market is always waiting. Supply and demand, so if thats the way people want it, keep up the disturbing trends of letting peoples moral values limit their job requirements... even if that's what the job entails. "Why yes.... I'm a fireman, but I think I'll just let those people burn because it's God's will and my moral and religious valiues can't allow me to rescue them against God's will... by the way, is today payday?" Sorry, but you dispense drugs, not make moral judgements about their use... that's what you get paid to do... so DO IT!

Although I disagree strongly with all these pharmacists who refuse to dispense meds, I fear this wave is coming. What really irks me is every place that is trying to give them the right to refuse somehow omits the right of a consumer to know before we walk into the establishment. Be as moralistic as you like, be a private owned store that reserves the right to employ people who feel it's their need to preach from the counter...but you owe me a sign on your front door that says so! Something simple and big on those big glass doors (or hell, the little ones too!) that says "This establishment employs pharmacists that will refuse to dispense certain medications due to personal beliefs". And you know what? Not only will I not get my prescription with you, I won't buy my mascara, my hairspray or even camera film from you, because that is my option. But, to covertly employee these people without informing me before I walk in your door; wastes their time, my time and now, my gas money!

A Pharmacy is a privately run bussiness and as such it should be allowed to make it's own policies so long as they are within the limmits of the law. In this case the law clearly states that the pharmacists shouldn't be forced to act against thier conscious, therefor the governor has no right to make this rule. If you want to change the law introduce a bill.

No pharmacist has the right to preach his conscience to total strangers. If they cannot stock the medication, that is one thing, and in that case, should be able to state where they can get it, but to deny someone medication on "moralistic" grounds is not right. And there should be a pharmacist there 247 to tend to EVERYONE'S needs. No one should have to wait. I applaude the governor for keeping his stance. I only hope he can continue to do so with this hot topic.

There is a world of difference between a small family pharmacy not stocking every medicine in existence, and any that pharmacy has the medicine in stock not dispensing it due to the moralistic views of one of its employees. No one expects a small pharmacy to stock everything -- they have to make their choices based on what will reasonably be called for in that community. But to have the medicine available and decide that your religion takes precedence over someone else's heathcare -- and to decide to second-guess a physician -- is not acceptable.

If you don't like cutting down trees, don't become a lumberjack. If you don't like dispensing medicine, don't become a pharmacist.
I work for a firm that develops websites for some pretty fundamentalist churches. Some of their content offends me. You know what? I suck it up. It's their site, not mine. They can put whatever they want there. If my boss decides that the content is something he doesn't mind hosting, then there's really not much left for me to do but add the content or find a new job.

| Following The Logic.... | Apr 12th. at 12:58:33 pm EDT

Sea Raven (New Haven, Connecticut) - Email Me

Indulge me in a couple scenes, if you would, that follow this same logic:
Scene 1: Patient: "I'm having a heart attack, please fill my nitro prescription." Pharmacist: "I'm sorry, I don't believe in stopping acts of God. You'll have to go to a different pharmacy to have that filled."
Scene 2: Patient: "My therapist gave me this prescription for anti-depressants. Can you tell me how long it will take to fill it?" Pharmacist: "You don't need medicine, you need prayer and maybe an exorcism to rid yourself of the demons possessing you."
Scene 3: Mother: "Is my child's seziure medicine ready?" Pharmacist: "Ah, yes, here it is. But, I don't believe in dispensing this sort of medication, so you'll have to come back tomorrow." Mother: "But he needs his medicine now." Pharmacist: "Ma'am, the other pharmacist will be here in the morning. You can get the medicine then."
Scary, isn't it?
