Update: Episcopal Priest Who Turned Druid Changes His Mind

Author: Kristin E. Holmes   Source: Philadelphia Inquirer (PA)

Title: EPISCOPAL PRIEST WHO TURNED DRUID CHANGES HIS MIND

In a rapid change of heart, a local Episcopal priest is abandoning Druid spirituality - a decision made one day after it was reported that he had renounced his Episcopal ordination and become the founding priest of a Druid group.

The Rev. W. William Melnyk notified Diocese of Pennsylvania Bishop Charles E. Bennison of his turnabout in a telephone message Friday evening, Bennison said yesterday.

Melnyk did not say whether he would seek reinstatement as an Episcopal priest. He lost his post as rector of St. James' Episcopal Church in Downingtown in November when the news of his Druid involvement first came to light.

In a voice mail to The Inquirer, Melnyk said he had removed the Druid group's Web site from the Internet and was cutting his ties with Druid spirituality. He attributed his decision to "events that have transpired in the last 24 hours."

Benefit Of The Doubt Apr 20th. at 6:33:14 am EDT

To those who can't view the article and get a subscription page, a quick search of the title through google news leads directly to the article (I didn't have any problems anyway) .

From the article it sounded as though he was attempting to merge two faiths and received a lot of flak for it from the conservative side of things. He was pretty obviously under a lot of pressure to pick sides (internally and externally) , and it's pretty clear he was serious about it (at least given the tone of the article and that he mentioned several months of reflection) .

Sadly, in what should have been a private and personal decision has turned public and controversial. While his decision seems hasty it seems a wiser course to give him the benefit of the doubt. Our community needs to remember that a large number of us were all seekers at one time or another. We all made mistakes, and probably appeared wishy-washy or flaky at one point or another.

Amazing how some can be so indecisive regarding their spiritual path.
I wonder how much money he stands to make, now that he has renounced the "evil" path of Paganism.
Wishy-washy indeed...

Having A Mid- Faith Crisis Apr 19th. at 5:02:00 pm EDT

There was a time when I too was seeking an alternate pathway. It is not an easy search for anyone nor is leaving the ties to a religion to which one was born. I'm sure that many have tried but found nothing, returning to the faith they wanted to leave. Some perhaps, are even afraid because they might lose their soul if they go astray. Perhaps the Druid faith he was researching didn't answer his inner need in some way.
Someone once said long ago, "The gods all know their own, and will call them together, from distances great and small."
If he is destined for another faith, it will find him. If not, then his calling was with him all along.

Yes, Leave Him Alone - And Show Some Respect Apr 19th. at 2:07:15 pm EDT

Aidan Odinson (Collingdale, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

I've had a brief email exchange with him.

First off, I would say that a number of us would not have the courage to try what he has been trying to do.

Secondly, I do know that I have no idea of what he has ben put through.

So, I will neither criticize nor praise him. But I will admire his courage for what he has been trying to do.

And yes, I can vouch for the fact that he is very much for real.

Leave The Poor Guy Alone... Apr 19th. at 12:50:02 pm EDT

'He attributed his decision to "events that have transpired in the last 24 hours."'

We don't know what this statement means. Why are we so quick to jump in there and judge? Let's show some compassion. He may be going through a "dark night of the soul". I hope he finds his way.

Please Keep Him Apr 19th. at 10:33:35 am EDT

I've been following this story since it first appeared way back. I think he is a jerk. I know I don't want him. I wouldn't blame the Christian Church if they didn't want him either.
